Lisbon, Portugal
How families in Lisbon handle a small pet's death
Lisbon summers are hot and dry, and a heatwave can push temperatures well above 35°C, while winters are mild and wet. If your pet dies at home in summer, close the shutters, keep them in the coolest room on a towel and place cold packs near the body. In the cooler months, an unheated room usually gives you enough time to call your vet and let family say goodbye.
Most aftercare in Lisbon is arranged in Portuguese, though many vets and providers are comfortable in English, which helps the city's large international community. Your vet is usually the first call: many practices can arrange cremation or explain the options. Ask whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or collective, and what is included in the price, such as collection and an urn.
Schools and after-school clubs across Lisbon keep classroom hamsters, mice and rats, so a child's first experience of a pet dying often happens away from home. If you're a teacher or a parent volunteer, a simple ceremony and a planter burial in the school garden, with permission, can be gentle and memorable. Communal cremation through a local vet is the easy alternative.
About 505,000 people live in Lisbon, which makes it the largest of the 2 Portugal communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Cascais (15 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lisbon too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What Portugal's funeral habits mean for small pets
We don't have a reliable local cremation rate for this area, and for a pet this small it matters less than you might think. What matters in Lisbon is simpler: whether there's a vet who sees small exotics, whether a nearby crematorium will take a tiny pet on a tray, and whether home burial is allowed where you live.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Lisbon
Cold rooms can put hamsters into torpor, a deep sleep that looks a lot like death. Hot rooms can cause heatstroke in rats and hamsters surprisingly quickly. If you're in Lisbon and unsure, warm a cold hamster gently and watch; if a pet died in the heat, check the cage position for any cage mates still with you.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Lisbon
In Lisbon, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.

What Portugal allows for a small pet
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Portugal and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
Step by step for a small pet in Lisbon
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, ask them to place the body in a small lined box, bag it and put it in the fridge.
- Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup if the death was unexpected; heat, drafts or a jammed water bottle are worth ruling out.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.
Remembering your little one in Lisbon
Lisbon is a city of hills, stairs and narrow streets, and many pets live in older apartment buildings in Alfama, Graça, Campo de Ourique or Arroios, often several floors up with no lift. When you ask about collection, say which floor you are on, whether the stairwell is narrow, and whether a car can stop outside. On steep lanes where parking is almost impossible, a provider may need to plan how to reach your door.

Questions people ask
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
Is it legal to bury a hamster in my garden in Portugal?
In most European countries, burying a small animal on property you own is allowed with conditions: away from water sources, outside protected zones and not if the animal had a notifiable disease. Details differ by country and sometimes by municipality, so check with your town hall or council. If you're renting or in an apartment in Lisbon, individual or collective cremation through your vet is the usual route.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
Schools usually let the teacher decide, often with parents. A short ceremony and a burial in the school garden, with the head's permission, or communal cremation through a local vet, are the common choices. Our classroom goodbye guide has a simple plan teachers can use in Lisbon or anywhere.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Lisbon?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
