Malmo, Skane
What Malmo offers when a rat or hamster dies
Most people in Malmö live in apartments, from the older blocks around Möllevången and Davidshall to the newer waterfront buildings of Västra Hamnen and Hyllie. Many households cycle or use buses and trains rather than drive, which matters if you can't easily carry your pet yourself. When you ask for aftercare options, mention your district, floor and whether there's a lift, so a collection from home can be arranged if you need one.
Malmö has a mild coastal climate for Sweden, with cool, windy, damp winters and pleasant summers that rarely get very hot. That gives you a little time after a pet dies, but the body should still be kept cool: lay your pet on a towel in the coolest room, away from radiators, and place cold packs wrapped in cloth along the back. Most families choose what to do within a day.
Losses often happen on a Friday evening, and in Malmo many smaller practices close for the weekend. For a pet this light, that isn't a problem. A lined box, sealed in a bag and kept in the fridge, usually holds over a weekend, and you can call the vet or crematorium in normal hours without paying out-of-hours fees. If the wait will be longer, ask whether freezing is acceptable.
With roughly 316,000 residents, Malmo is one of the Skane communities we cover.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
Cremation is widely accepted in Sweden, where about 84.69%[1] of people are cremated. That familiarity helps if you're a renter or live in a flat: cremation is the easy, portable choice when you can't dig. If you do have a garden, though, a deep burial remains free, quick and every bit as respectful.
The Sweden percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Malmo, not as a count of pets.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Malmo
Whatever the weather in Malmo, the rule for a small pet is the same: wrap them, place them in a small box and keep them cool. A fridge gives you a day or two. In cold weather, check your hamster isn't in torpor before deciding; in hot weather, don't leave them in the cage or a car while you think.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Malmo?
European crematoria almost never list a price for a hamster, but the smallest bands give a guide. One Irish provider lists private cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg,[5] and a German consumer guide puts collective cremation at EUR 85 to 205.[6] Ask a Malmo provider for their lowest band.

What Skane allows for a small pet
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[8], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in Skane. Local burial and scattering rules follow.
In Sweden, ashes from an individual cremation normally take two to four weeks to come back, sometimes longer.[9] For a hamster or rat, ask your vet whether a collective cremation would suit you better, or bury on your own land if you own it, deep and away from water, with a stone over the spot.
The first day, one step at a time
- Take a photo or a clipping from their coat, and hold on to the wheel, hammock or hideout they loved if that feels right.
- Wrap your pet in a material that will rot away, such as cotton, paper or a little cardboard box, rather than a plastic container.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: a large, deep pot, your pet near the bottom, plenty of compost and a meaningful plant on top.
- If you'd rather cremate, approach a crematorium yourself, or ask us to find small-pet options and let us do the ringing round.
- Watch surviving cage mates over the next two weeks. More handling, longer free-range time and a snug nest box all make a difference.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Cremation is the norm for people in Sweden, with well over four in five funerals now cremations, and many Malmö families feel the same way about their pets. With few private gardens in the city, cremation is often the practical choice for cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds. Ask whether the cremation is individual, with ashes returned, or collective, and get the total price in writing before you agree.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Malmo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?
Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a Malmo park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
Can I bury my hamster if I rent or live in an apartment in Malmo?
Not in shared grounds without permission, and never in a public park. A deep planter is the easy answer: a large, deep pot, your pet wrapped near the bottom, plenty of compost and a plant on top. It moves with you. If that isn't practical, communal cremation through a local vet is simple and inexpensive.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Malmo vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[10] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
