Abu Dhabi rules for pocket pets
Public parks, nature reserves and shared courtyards are off-limits for pet burial almost everywhere, including Abu Dhabi. Private land with the owner's permission is the usual answer, and a deep planter counts as your own ground. Here's what else applies locally.
In the UAE, pet burial isn't generally permitted, so cremation is the usual route even for a hamster or rat. Shared cremation of a pet under 5 kg costs about AED 700 to 900; separate cremation costs more. Summer heat is intense, so keep your pet wrapped and in the fridge until drop-off, and ask how ashes are returned.
A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- If an escaped rat, mouse or hamster is found dead in the house, put gloves on, scoop them up in a cloth and set them down in a shoebox.
- Think about poison. Where rodent bait might have been within reach, let your vet know and steer other pets clear of the area.
- Skip the home grave if bait is possible. A poisoned body can harm a dog, cat or owl that digs it up, so cremation is the safer route.
- Clean the place where they were found with hot soapy water.
- Forgive yourself. Rodents are escape artists, and even careful keepers lose one behind a sofa or under the floorboards.
- Check cage doors and gaps so the rest of the group don't follow; a cheap door clip is all it usually takes.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
Freeze-drying is sometimes offered for small pets, and it does keep a rat or hamster looking as they did. It's slow and expensive: one industry report says small pets typically take three to six months,[4] and one UK guide puts hamster freeze-drying at £300 to £500.[5] Most Abu Dhabi families choose a photo, a paw print or a tiny vial instead, but it's a real option if it matters to you.
