Hamster & Rat Cremation in Scotland: what to know
In the larger places in Scotland, such as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, you'll usually find several crematoria and at least one vet who treats small exotics. In smaller towns, the local vet may not see rodents at all, and small pets travel to a regional crematorium on set days. Both routes work well for a hamster or rat.
We cover 4 communities in Scotland. The questions to ask are the same in all of them: is it really private, is a small tray used, how much ash comes back from a pet this size and what's the total in writing? This page explains the regional picture; each city page goes further.

Cremation habits in Scotland, and what they mean for a hamster
About 74.5%[1] of people in Scotland are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, crematoria compete for business, which can help you. Ask for a small-pet price for your rat or gerbil; with plenty of providers nearby, someone is likely to quote below the standard cat band.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Scotland
The Competition and Markets Authority's review of vet services looked closely at cremation. It found large vet groups' median individual cremation for a cat averaged GBP 186.87[2], and a hamster is usually billed at or below that line. Ask your Scotland vet whether a small-pet band exists; if not, an independent crematorium may quote less.
UK cremation prices run GBP 50 to GBP 300+[3], and the bottom of that range is communal cremation of a small pet, which is where a hamster or mouse belongs. Following the CMA review, the 2026 remedies require vet practices to offer a communal option and set out their prices, so it's reasonable to ask your Scotland vet for the list.
| Option | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Communal, small pet | from about £50 | Lowest CMA-reported price |
| Individual, cat (vet groups' median) | GBP 186.87[2] | A rodent is often charged at or below this |
| Individual, cat (independent practices) | about £128 | Sample median incl. VAT |

Local rules for small-pet burial in Scotland
Rodents are too small to trigger most of the rules written for livestock and larger pets, so aftercare in Scotland is mostly a matter of good sense. The points that do apply are who owns the ground, whether your pet was euthanized and whether any illness could spread. The local burial and scattering notes for Scotland follow.
In the UK, small pets such as hamsters and rats can generally be buried in your own garden if they didn't have a disease dangerous to people or animals. UK hamsters have a median age at death of 1.75 years[5], so many families go through this more than once. Since the CMA review, vets must offer a communal option and show prices, so ask for the small-pet price list.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Check for torpor first. A hamster that feels stiff and cold after a chilly night may only be in torpor. Cup them in your palms or a towel and keep an eye on them for several hours.
- Once you're sure, take your time. Lay your pet in a small cardboard box or tissue-lined container with a little of their bedding.
- Let cage mates say goodbye. Rats, mice and gerbils often sniff a companion's body for a few minutes, and many keepers feel it helps them.
- Keep the box cool. A cool room is fine for a few hours; wrapped and bagged in the fridge gives you a day or two.
- Choose burial or cremation. If the garden is yours, burial costs nothing and can happen today. Communal cremation is cheap, while a private one sends back a pinch of ash to keep.
- If cremating, ask three questions: do they charge a lower rate for small pets, does your pet go on their own tray, and about how much ash should you expect back?
- Clean the cage from top to bottom if sickness might have played a part, before any surviving or new pet moves back in.
Ways to mark a short, bright life
Many Scotland families keep something simple: a framed photo, a clay print of a tiny paw, the hammock that hung in the cage for years. If you chose private cremation, a small glass vial or a pendant holds the whole amount. Some scatter a pinch under a garden plant and keep the rest on a shelf.

Questions people ask
How many communities do you cover in Scotland?
We currently have local rodent aftercare guides for 4 communities in Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, burial rules and what to ask a crematorium about very small pets.
How long do rodent ashes take to come back in Scotland?
Usually days rather than weeks, though it depends on how the crematorium collects. By our estimate, typical return times across the markets we track run from three to fourteen days,[4] with paid express services faster and some European providers slower. Ask for a date when you book.
How much does rodent cremation cost in Scotland?
Most providers across Scotland charge a hamster or rat at their smallest weight band, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than private, and home burial is free. Ask each provider for a written quote, whether a small-pet rate applies and whether a basic container is included.
Do vets in Scotland charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in Scotland?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds. Many schools prefer communal cremation arranged by a nearby vet, because grounds change and not every family is comfortable with a burial on site. Our plan for classroom goodbyes keeps it simple.
Is private cremation worth it for a mouse or hamster in Scotland?
It's worth it if you want a keepsake, can't bury, or might move. It returns only a pinch to a tablespoon of ash, and can cost several times what the pet did. Communal cremation or a careful home burial are equally respectful choices. Ask any provider whether they use a small tray for tiny pets.
