Calabasas, California
What Calabasas offers when a rat or hamster dies
Families in Calabasas often have large homes with landscaped yards, but many hillside lots are too rocky or steep for a pet grave, and homeowners' associations may have rules about it. Many households there choose an individual cremation and bring the remains home. Some people later carry a portion of the ashes up to a favorite overlook in the Santa Monica Mountains, or keep them at home in a simple urn.
Calabasas sits in the western Santa Monica Mountains along the 101 freeway, with many homes in gated communities, hillside developments and canyon roads. Some neighborhoods have private roads and guard gates, which can slow down anyone arriving to collect a pet. When you request aftercare options, mention whether a gate code or guard call is needed and how far the house is from the main road, so the visit is not delayed.
In farming country around Calabasas, barn cats and working dogs are a real risk to a small grave, and so are the wild rats and mice living in outbuildings. Choose a spot away from barns and feed stores, weigh the grave down with something heavy and flat, and consider a stone the children can paint. It turns a practical precaution into part of the goodbye.
With roughly 22,027 residents, Calabasas is the 255th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Santa Clarita, about 19 miles (31 km) away, which is where some providers serving Calabasas are based.
Our pages for Agoura Hills (6 miles), Thousand Oaks (10 miles, a larger centre) and Simi Valley (11 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Calabasas as well.
70.5%[1]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
1.75 years[2]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are O'Neill et al. 2022, Journal of Small Animal Practice and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
Scattering ashes is a familiar ritual in California, where around 70.5%[1] of people are cremated. That suits small pets well: a hamster's teaspoon of ash can be scattered in one moment under a rosebush, in a planter or at a spot the family loves, with nothing left to store. Ask permission first if the place isn't yours.
The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Calabasas, not as a count of pets.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Calabasas
Even in a mild place like Calabasas, warmer weeks around August deserve care: keep a tiny body cool, indoors and out of sun until burial or drop-off. Small rodents don't need the urgency a large dog does, but a few hours in a warm room makes a difference.
A planter burial suits Calabasas's climate well. A plant on a sheltered balcony will grow most of the year, and you won't have to worry about frozen soil or baking heat. Choose something hardy and meaningful, and put a small stone or tile on the surface with your pet's name.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
Embrace Pet Insurance lists US communal cremation at $30 to $200 and private at $100 to $500 or more, across all sizes.[5] A rat, hamster or mouse should sit at the very bottom of those ranges, and communal cremation for a pet this light is often the least expensive option in Calabasas. Home pickup and an urn can easily cost more than the cremation, so drop off yourself if you can.

What California allows for a small pet
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in California. Local burial and scattering rules follow.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Calabasas.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the California level first; our California rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Calabasas or your HOA adds anything.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Take a moment with a long life. Chinchillas and degus live far longer than hamsters, so this grief may be bigger than you expected.
- Weigh your pet on a kitchen scale when one is handy; cremation prices go by weight, and the figure hints at how much ash to expect.
- [Estimate the ashes](/tools/ashes-weight-estimator) and you'll get a rough figure for what comes back from a pet of that size.
- Ask for private cremation on a small-animal tray when ashes matter to you; rodents this size return enough to fill a small urn.
- Watch a bonded companion closely. Chinchillas and degus are social, and a surviving partner may need extra time with you, and later perhaps a new friend.
- Choose an urn by volume, not species; our urn sizing tool converts weight into cubic inches.
Keeping their memory alive in Calabasas
Summers in Calabasas are warm and dry, and winters mild, with no real freezes. In hot weather, a pet's body should be kept in an air-conditioned room with wrapped ice packs until it is collected. Autumn winds bring serious fire danger here: the 2018 Woolsey Fire burned through the surrounding hills. Keep an evacuation plan for your animals, and put safety first if a fire is near.

Questions people ask
Does the Calabasas climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 79°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the Calabasas page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Calabasas?
Usually yes. Agoura Hills is about 6 miles away, Thousand Oaks is about 10 miles away and Simi Valley is about 11 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Santa Clarita to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Santa Clarita (roughly 19 miles from Calabasas) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation or burial more common for small pets in California?
For people, about 70.5%[1] of deaths in California end in cremation. For rodents, burial at home is still very common because it's free and immediate. In one US survey, about 40% of owners preferred cremation and about 35% home burial for a future pet,[8] so families are close to evenly divided.
Will my vet in Calabasas keep my rat until the crematorium collects?
Most practices that offer cremation have a freezer or cold store for exactly this, and small pets wait there for the next collection, which in smaller towns may run weekly. Ask how your pet will be labeled and stored, and when the next pickup is due. If you'd rather not wait, you can usually take your pet to the crematorium serving Santa Clarita yourself.
