San Diego's coast is mild, with August highs around 71°F and no freezing months, so there is usually a little time to think after a pet dies at home. Inland valleys run much hotter in summer, and fall Santa Ana winds can bring heat and wildfire risk. Keep your pet in a cool room with cool packs wrapped in towels. Many homes sit on hillsides or canyon lots that make backyard burial difficult.
The City of San Diego separates dead-animal removal by location: city streets and public rights-of-way, county roads and unincorporated areas, private property, and state highways each follow different routes. Removal from private property carries a fee, and the city asks residents not to put dead animals in trash or recycling bins. None of those routes is a private cremation, so for your own pet's ashes, book one with a vet or pet crematory.
In a city the size of San Diego, finding a pet crematorium is rarely the hard part. Finding one that takes a 100-gram hamster seriously is. Most price lists here are built around cats and dogs, so ask two questions on the first call: do you have a small-animal rate, and do you cremate tiny pets on a separate tray? A confident yes to both is a good sign.

How California feels about cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in California: about 70.5%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.

Local weather affects two things for a rodent: how quickly you need to cool the body, and whether a burial in the garden is practical. Hard, frozen or waterlogged ground makes a deep grave difficult. Rules worth knowing before you dig in California
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in California. Local burial and scattering rules follow.

The first day, one step at a time
- Take a photo or a clipping of fur, and keep their hammock, wheel or favorite hideout if you'd like to.
- Wrap your pet in a material that will rot away, such as cotton, paper or a little cardboard box, rather than a plastic container.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: a large, deep pot, your pet near the bottom, plenty of compost and a meaningful plant on top.
- If you'd rather cremate, contact a crematorium directly or ask us to find small-pet options for you.
- Watch surviving cage mates for a week or two; extra attention, time out of the cage and a warm nest all help.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet

Why does the San Diego page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from San Diego?
Usually yes. Chula Vista is about 7 miles away, Lemon Grove is about 7 miles away and La Mesa is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
Is cremation or burial more common for small pets in California?
For people, about 70.5%[1] of deaths in California end in cremation. For rodents, burial at home is still very common because it's free and immediate. In one US survey, about 40% of owners preferred cremation and about 35% home burial for a future pet,[8] so families are close to evenly divided.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
Schools usually let the teacher decide, often with parents. A short ceremony and a burial in the school garden, with the head's permission, or communal cremation through a local vet, are the common choices. Our classroom goodbye guide has a simple plan teachers can use in San Diego or anywhere.
