When a small pet dies in Littleton: burial or cremation
Most price lists in Littleton start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.

How families in Littleton handle a small pet's death
Littleton sits a little higher and closer to the foothills than downtown Denver, so it sees chilly nights from November through March and summer highs near 90. The South Platte River runs along its west side. On a sweltering day, bring your pet in off the patio and onto a cool floor quickly. In deep winter, a garage that stays above freezing but below room temperature works well overnight.
South Platte Park, the High Line Canal trail and Chatfield State Park are all part of daily life in Littleton, and many residents associate them with years spent outside with their animals. Some families keep ashes indoors near a favorite window; others choose to bury them in a garden bed beside a lilac or crabapple. The ashes can stay in the temporary container they come home in until you settle on something.
Small towns like Littleton have one real advantage: your vet probably knows the crematorium staff by name. Ask them honestly whether it's worth cremating a mouse privately, how much ash to expect and whether a communal cremation would be kinder to your budget. A good vet will give you a straight answer.
With roughly 46,246 residents, Littleton is the 20th-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Denver, about 11 miles (17 km) away, which is where some providers serving Littleton are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Englewood (4 miles), Centennial (8 miles, a larger centre) and Lakewood (9 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

What Colorado's funeral habits mean for small pets
In Colorado, roughly 77.4%[1] of people are cremated, so most families already understand the difference between private and communal. For a rodent, that difference matters more than usual: a private cremation may return only a teaspoon of ash, while communal returns nothing at all but costs far less. Both are dignified.
The Colorado percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Littleton, not as a count of pets.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Littleton
Littleton winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. Before anything else, check it isn't torpor. Hamsters in a chilly room can drop into a deep, cold sleep that looks like death: stiff, cool, barely breathing. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel and watch for a few hours before deciding.
Cold drafts matter for the pets still with you, too. If a hamster or gerbil died in a chilly room in Littleton, move the cage somewhere steady and warm, away from windows and exterior doors. Surviving rats and mice huddle for warmth, so if a cage mate is gone, extra nesting material helps them through the cold.

What rodent cremation costs around Littleton
For a pet this small, the honest comparison in Littleton is between three things: a garden or planter burial that costs nothing, communal cremation at the bottom of the price range, and a private cremation that may cost $100 to $175[5] for a keepsake teaspoon of ash. All three are respectful; the table shows typical US bands.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Colorado: Colorado costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you bury or scatter in Colorado
Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Colorado are below.
To find your county or city office in Colorado, start with the official Colorado local government directory.
The Colorado page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Littleton's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, ask them to place the body in a small lined box, bag it and put it in the fridge.
- Ask them to check the others: water bottles, room temperature and food for any cage mates left in their care.
- Decide from a distance. With a fridge or freezer available, a burial can be postponed until you're back, while a cremation is easy to set up over the phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup if the death was unexpected; heat, drafts or a jammed water bottle are worth ruling out.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.
Small memorials for small pets
Littleton is a city of about 46,000 just south of Denver, the Arapahoe County seat, with a historic Main Street, light-rail stations and neighborhoods of mid-century ranch homes and older bungalows. Denver is about 11 miles north. Many streets are established and easy to find, so a home collection is usually straightforward; just mention stairs, a narrow side yard or a basement where your pet is resting.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Littleton?
Usually yes. Englewood is about 4 miles away, Centennial is about 8 miles away and Lakewood is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Denver to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Denver (roughly 11 miles from Littleton) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Littleton climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 88°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Is cremation common in Colorado?
For people, yes: about 77.4%[1] of Colorado deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Littleton follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will my vet in Littleton keep my rat until the crematorium collects?
Most practices that offer cremation have a freezer or cold store for exactly this, and small pets wait there for the next collection, which in smaller towns may run weekly. Ask how your pet will be labeled and stored, and when the next pickup is due. If you'd rather not wait, you can usually take your pet to the crematorium serving Denver yourself.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
