Conway, Florida
Burial or cremation for a pocket pet in Conway
Many Conway homes sit close to the water, with sandy soil and a high water table near the lakeshore, which makes backyard burial unreliable. Cremation is the more common choice, and it keeps options open. Some families keep the urn inside, facing the lake a cat liked to watch from the windowsill, and others later place a small portion in the garden near the dock.
Conway is an unincorporated community in Orange County, about 5 miles southeast of downtown Orlando, wrapped around the Lake Conway chain of lakes next to the city of Belle Isle. Streets range from mid-century ranch houses to large lakefront homes with docks and boathouses. Some lakefront lots sit down long private drives, so if your home is set back from the road, tell the provider where to turn in and how far the vehicle will need to go.
Living outside Conway on a rural road? A pet this small doesn't need a special collection. You can take them to your vet in a lined box and ask them to include your pet on the next crematorium run, or drive to the crematorium yourself if you want to hand them over in person. Both save mileage fees.
Conway is home to about 13,000 people, the 146th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 5 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Conway run from there.
Our pages for Belle Isle (2 miles), Edgewood (2 miles) and Pine Castle (3 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Conway as well.

Burial, cremation and the Florida tradition
Cremation is the norm for people in Florida: about 72.5%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Conway, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Conway weather and your small pet
A body this small changes quickly in heat. In Conway's warmest weeks, don't leave your hamster or mouse in the cage, on a windowsill or in a parked car while you decide. Wrap them in a paper towel, place them in a small box, and keep the box in the fridge (never next to food, and in a sealed bag). That gives you a calm day or two.
If you're burying in a planter on a hot Conway balcony, choose a large, deep pot and a shaded corner. Terracotta and dark plastic both heat up fast in July. Plenty of compost on top keeps the burial respectful and the plant above it alive through the summer.

Rodent aftercare prices near Conway, honestly compared
For a pet this small, the honest comparison in Conway is between three things: a garden or planter burial that costs nothing, communal cremation at the bottom of the price range, and a private cremation that may cost $100 to $175[5] for a keepsake teaspoon of ash. All three are respectful; the table shows typical US bands.

Before you bury or scatter in Florida
Cremating a hamster or rat needs no permit anywhere we cover. The rules that matter for small pets are about burial and scattering: whether you can bury in your own garden, how deep, and how far from water. Here's what applies in Florida.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Conway.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Conway, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Your checklist for a small pet in Conway
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly for the euthanasia, and ask whether they sedate small pets first; most do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day arrives, whether private cremation, communal, or burial at home, rather than working it out at reception.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding to settle your pet during the journey and to lay them on afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay for the whole appointment. Many owners find that being there eases the guilt later.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. Euthanasia medication stays in a pet's tissues, so pick a place animals can't reach and cover it with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand where the practice offers it, so there's no queue at the desk and you can simply go.
- Give surviving cage mates a few minutes with your pet's body if you bring them home.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Conway's July highs near 92F and lows around 50F in January mean the cooler months give only a little leeway after a death. Bring your pet out of any sunroom or screened porch, where heat builds fast, and into air conditioning. A quilt beneath them and ice bags in pillowcases along the body will hold things steady while the family gathers from across town.

Questions people ask
Why does the Conway page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Conway?
Usually yes. Belle Isle is about 2 miles away, Edgewood is about 2 miles away and Pine Castle is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Conway climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 5 miles from Conway) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
My chinchilla died on a hot day in Conway. Was it the heat?
It may well have been. Chinchillas have extremely dense fur and cope poorly once a room climbs past the mid-70s°F (about 24°C); warning signs include lying stretched out, red ears and fast breathing. A vet can't always confirm heatstroke afterwards. What matters now is protecting any cage mates: move them somewhere air-conditioned, add a chilled granite tile and keep the cage out of sunlight.
