Palm Beach, Florida
What Palm Beach offers when a rat or hamster dies
Palm Beach sits in true subtropical Florida, with no real winter to speak of and heavy, humid heat from late spring into autumn. After a pet dies, cool the room right away and keep the body wrapped and out of the sun. Hurricane season can bring evacuation orders for the island, and bridges may close in high winds, so ask providers how they work around storms.
The paved Lake Trail runs along the lagoon side of the island, and plenty of residents know every stretch of it from years of strolls with an animal at their side. It can be a gentle place to remember. Scattering ashes in the lagoon or on town beaches may be limited by local ordinances and state rules, so ask before planning anything beyond a quiet visit.
Home burial is the most common choice for small pets around Palm Beach, especially where families have land. It's free and immediate. The main risk out here is wildlife: foxes, coyotes, raccoons and farm dogs will dig for a small body. A good depth, a flat stone or slab on top and a spot well away from wells and streams keeps things safe.
With roughly 9,423 residents, Palm Beach is the 165th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Palm Beach are based about 44 miles away in Port St. Lucie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for West Palm Beach (1 miles, a larger centre), Boynton Beach (13 miles, a larger centre) and Delray Beach (18 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Palm Beach as well.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for a hamster
With about 72.5%[1] of people in Florida choosing cremation, local families rarely have to explain why they'd like a pet's ashes home. Even for a hamster, a small vial on a shelf is an ordinary, accepted thing here. Just be realistic about how little comes back, and choose a keepsake sized for a pinch.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Palm Beach, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Palm Beach
We don't hold detailed weather records for Palm Beach, so use your own thermometer. If the room where your pet lived felt cold overnight, roughly below 60°F (15°C), check a hamster for torpor before anything else. If it was hotter than about 80°F (27°C), heat may have played a part, and any other pets need moving somewhere cooler.

Rodent aftercare prices near Palm Beach, honestly compared
Most Palm Beach families pay their vet, not the crematorium. That's convenient, but the vet adds a handling margin and usually works with one provider. For a pocket pet you can often go direct: ask for the private price with a small tray, the communal price, and whether a basic container is included.
The full price table by size is on our Florida page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Florida allows for a small pet
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Florida and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Palm Beach's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- If an escaped rat, mouse or hamster is found dead in the house, wear gloves, lift them in a cloth and lay them in a shoebox.
- Think about poison. If there's any chance they reached rodent bait, tell your vet and keep other pets away from the spot.
- Skip the home grave if bait is possible. A poisoned body can harm a dog, cat or owl that digs it up, so cremation is the safer route.
- Clean the place where they were found using hot water and soap.
- Forgive yourself. Rodents are escape artists, and even careful keepers lose one behind a sofa or under the floorboards.
- Check cage doors and gaps so the rest of the group don't follow; a cheap door clip is all it usually takes.
Keeping their memory alive in Palm Beach
The town of Palm Beach occupies a narrow barrier island, with the Atlantic on one side and the Lake Worth Lagoon on the other, and West Palm Beach just across the bridges. Estates hidden behind tall hedges share the island with apartment buildings and condominiums. Many homes have staff, gates or building concierges, so tell a collection service exactly who will meet them and where they may park on the island's quiet streets.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Palm Beach?
Usually yes. West Palm Beach is about 1 miles away, Boynton Beach is about 13 miles away and Delray Beach is about 18 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Palm Beach follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Palm Beach actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Port St. Lucie, about 44 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Palm Beach and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[6] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
