Summers reach about 92F in July, but January nights can fall to the mid-40s, and the occasional frost does happen this far north of Orlando. Heat is still the bigger concern for most of the year. Keep your pet on a blanket on the tile in a cooled room, with ice in towels around it, and ask a neighbor for help lifting if your animal is heavy. Aim to arrange cremation within a day.
Nearly everyone in The Villages came from somewhere else, often the Midwest or Northeast, and many brought a pet with them into retirement. For a lot of residents, that animal is part of the daily rhythm of golf-cart rides and evenings on the square. Private cremation with the ashes kept at home is common here. Some residents leave instructions for the ashes to go with them, or back to a family plot up north, later on.
Many families in and around The Villages cremate for one simple reason: they might move. A garden grave stays with the house; a tiny vial of ash comes with you. If that matters, ask the crematorium serving Orlando whether they use a small tray for pocket pets, so there's something meaningful to return.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
Cremation is the norm for people in Florida: about 72.5%[1] of people who die there are cremated. That makes pet crematoria easy to find, but it doesn't mean cremation is automatically right for a hamster. Many families who would never bury a person still bury a mouse in the garden, and that's perfectly reasonable for a pet that weighs a few ounces.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for The Villages, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in The Villages
The Villages gets hot: July averages highs around 92°F. Rats, hamsters and degus overheat far faster than people do, and most struggle once a room climbs above about 80°F (27°C). If your pet dies during a hot spell, move them into a small box in the coolest room right away, then into the fridge if burial or cremation is more than a few hours off.
Heat also changes a garden burial. Hard, dry ground in July can make it tough to dig a small grave deep enough, and a shallow one will draw ants, flies and animals. Water the spot the evening before, dig in the cool of the morning, and put a flat stone over the top when you're done.

Florida rules for pocket pets
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[8], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in Florida. Local burial and scattering rules follow.

Your checklist for a small pet in The Villages
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, ask them to place the body in a small lined box, bag it and put it in the fridge.
- Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
- Decide from a distance. With a fridge or freezer available, a burial can be postponed until you're back, while a cremation is easy to set up over the phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup when the death came as a surprise, so you can rule out a stuck water bottle, a draft or a room that got too hot.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, even if the body has already gone: scattering ashes, planting something or looking through photos together.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
The Villages is a vast age-restricted community centered in Sumter County and reaching into Lake and Marion counties, roughly 45 miles northwest of Orlando. Homes are mostly villas, patio homes and single-family houses on small lots, laid out in numbered villages with deed restrictions and resident gate systems. Golf carts are the everyday transport. Can I send my pet for cremation in The Villages if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a The Villages park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
