Union Park, Florida
What Union Park offers when a rat or hamster dies
Union Park is an unincorporated community in east Orange County, roughly nine miles from downtown Orlando, strung along East Colonial Drive between the city and the University of Central Florida. Streets are lined with 1960s and 1970s ranch houses, newer townhomes and plenty of student rentals. If you rent, let the provider know whether a landlord or roommate needs to be present when someone comes to collect your pet.
Union Park stays warm through the year, with highs near 92F in the peak of summer and winter lows that rarely fall much below 50F. That warmth means a pet's body needs cooling soon after death. Lay your animal on a towel in the coldest part of the house, draw the blinds and turn the thermostat down. Heavy afternoon storms can flood side streets for an hour or two, so time calls around them.
Many families in and around Union Park cremate for one simple reason: they might move. A garden grave stays with the house; a tiny vial of ash comes with you. If that matters, ask the crematorium serving Orlando whether they use a small tray for pocket pets, so there's something meaningful to return.
Union Park is home to about 10,000 people, the 160th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Orlando, about 9 miles (14 km) away, which is where some providers serving Union Park are based.
Families in Union Park often end up using a provider from Alafaya (3 miles, a larger centre), Goldenrod (4 miles) and Azalea Park (4 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

How Florida feels about cremation
In Florida, where roughly 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Union Park
Chinchillas and degus are the rodents least built for Union Park's summers. A chinchilla's dense coat traps heat, and a room nearing 92°F can become dangerous within an hour or two. If you've lost one in July, a fan alone won't protect the others; air conditioning, a chilled granite slab and a shaded room are what experienced keepers rely on.
If you're burying in a planter on a hot Union Park balcony, choose a large, deep pot and a shaded corner. Terracotta and dark plastic both heat up fast in July. Plenty of compost on top keeps the burial respectful and the plant above it alive through the summer.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Union Park
Most Union Park families pay their vet, not the crematorium. That's convenient, but the vet adds a handling margin and usually works with one provider. For a pocket pet you can often go direct: ask for the private price with a small tray, the communal price, and whether a basic container is included.

What Florida allows for a small pet
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in Florida. Local burial and scattering rules follow.

The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Union Park's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly for the euthanasia, and ask whether they sedate small pets first; most do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day so you aren't choosing at the counter: home burial, communal, or private cremation.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding to settle your pet during the journey and to lay them on afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay from start to finish. Owners who were present often say it made the guilt lighter in the weeks that followed.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. The drugs remain in the body after death, so choose a spot no animal can dig into and weigh it down with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand if the practice allows, so you can leave quietly when it's over.
- Give surviving cage mates a few minutes to sniff and investigate, if your pet comes home with you.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
The Econlockhatchee River runs through wilder country just east of Union Park, and its shaded trails are where many east Orlando households go to clear their heads. Some people find comfort in honoring a pet in that kind of setting. Public lands have their own scattering rules, so ask the managing agency before bringing ashes. A small urn at home can hold them while you decide.

Questions people ask
Does the Union Park climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Union Park?
The closest communities we cover are Alafaya (about 3 miles), Goldenrod (about 4 miles) and Azalea Park (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Union Park too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Union Park actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 9 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Union Park and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Union Park page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
My chinchilla died on a hot day in Union Park. Was it the heat?
It may well have been. Chinchillas have extremely dense fur and cope poorly once a room climbs past the mid-70s°F (about 24°C); warning signs include lying stretched out, red ears and fast breathing. A vet can't always confirm heatstroke afterwards. What matters now is protecting any cage mates: move them somewhere air-conditioned, add a chilled granite tile and keep the cage out of sunlight.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[8] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
