Joliet, Illinois
Burial or cremation for a pocket pet in Joliet
Joliet has grown fast, with newer subdivisions spreading west and south alongside older neighborhoods near downtown and the Des Plaines River. Many homes have yards and garages, which can make collection straightforward, but distances across Will County add up. When you send a request, include your part of Joliet or the neighboring town, and whether your pet is at home or at the vet.
Joliet winters are long and cold, with freezing months from November through March and January lows in the teens. That gives you a little more time, but keep your pet's body wrapped and in a cool room, not a heated garage or a freezing porch. Summers are hot and humid, and in July and August you should act quickly, keep your pet cool and ask your vet about holding them while you decide.
In a place like Joliet, many families have a yard, and most hamsters and rats are buried at home. That's a good, free choice if you own the house. Dig deeper than you think, wrap your pet in paper or cotton, and put a flat stone on top. Local dogs, cats and foxes can smell even a very small grave.
Joliet's population is around 152,241, the 4th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 34 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Joliet run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Crest Hill (4 miles), Lockport (5 miles) and New Lenox (6 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Joliet routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

What Illinois's funeral habits mean for small pets
In Illinois, around 60.2%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematoria are well established as a result, although most still set their lowest price band around cats. If you're in Joliet and want a private cremation for a rat or hamster, ask directly whether a pocket-pet rate exists; not every provider advertises one.
Source for the Illinois number: NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for Joliet, so the human figure is the best local signal available.
Joliet weather and your small pet
Torpor catches out a lot of hamster keepers in Joliet every winter. If your hamster's cage sits near a window, a door or an unheated room, and the room dropped well below the mid-60s overnight, there's a real chance they're dormant rather than dead. Warmth, patience and a quiet room are all it takes to find out.
Frozen ground is the other winter problem in Joliet. With 5 months of freezing lows, you may not be able to dig deep enough for a safe burial until spring. Many families keep their pet wrapped in the freezer until the thaw, with no harm done. Others choose cremation now so they don't have to wait.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Joliet?
Very few US crematoria publish a price just for pocket pets. Most put a hamster in their smallest band, where CareCredit lists private cremation at $100 to $175 for pets up to 30 lb.[5] That's why a private cremation for a 100-gram pet in Joliet can cost several times what the pet did. Some providers have a lower small-animal rate, so always ask.

Illinois rules for pocket pets
If your rodent died of something contagious, the rules in Illinois and common sense point the same way: cremation is the safer choice, and used bedding should be bagged and binned rather than composted. Your vet can tell you whether the illness was likely infectious. Burial and scattering details for Illinois are set out below.
To find your county or city office in Illinois, start with the official Illinois local government directory.
The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Joliet's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Take a photo or a clipping of fur, and keep their hammock, wheel or favorite hideout if you'd like to.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: the deepest, widest pot you can find, your pet low down, compost on top and a plant that means something to you.
- If you'd rather cremate, approach a crematorium yourself, or ask us to find small-pet options and let us do the ringing round.
- Watch surviving cage mates over the next two weeks. More handling, longer free-range time and a snug nest box all make a difference.
Small memorials for small pets
Many Joliet families have deep roots in the area, and memorials often reflect that: ashes kept at home, a plant in the backyard, a photo on the wall. Private cremation returns your pet's ashes, while communal cremation is a lower-cost option with none returned. If you're thinking of burying your pet in your yard, check local rules first, and remember the ground is frozen for months.

Questions people ask
Does the Joliet climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Joliet?
Usually yes. Crest Hill is about 4 miles away, Lockport is about 5 miles away and New Lenox is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 34 miles from Joliet) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Joliet page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is it safe to bury a rat that was put to sleep?
Only if you can bury deeply. Euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can harm wildlife or pets that dig. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated. Go at least three feet down with a heavy slab on top, or choose cremation instead.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Joliet?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
