Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
Funeral customs in Michigan are still shifting, with roughly 69.5%[1] of people now cremated. For small pets that shows up at the vet's counter: some practices offer cremation by default, while others expect you to take a hamster home. Neither expectation should decide for you. Does the Detroit climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Detroit?

Is it safe to bury a rat that was put to sleep?
Only if you can bury deeply. Euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can harm wildlife or pets that dig. Since 2003[6], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated. Go at least three feet down with a heavy slab on top, or choose cremation instead.
Can I keep my hamster in the freezer until spring in Detroit?
Yes, plenty of families in cold places do. Wrap your pet in paper towel, tuck them into a small carton, seal it in a freezer bag and label it clearly so nobody opens it by mistake. Store it at the back, away from food. When the ground thaws, let the box sit in the fridge overnight before burial. If you might choose cremation later, ask the provider first; most accept frozen pets.
Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
