Clovis, New Mexico
Hamster and rat goodbyes in Clovis: the local picture
Open sky, cropland and grassland, and the shallow playa lakes that fill after heavy rain surround Clovis, and the edge of town is where plenty of residents take their pets for open air. Scattering on private farmland needs the owner's permission. Military families expecting a move often keep the ashes in a sealed urn so their companion can travel with them to the next base.
Clovis is the Curry County seat on the flat High Plains of eastern New Mexico, a few miles from the Texas line, with Cannon Air Force Base just to the west. A good number of households are military families on multi-year assignments, living in rentals or base housing where digging a grave simply isn't an option. For them, cremation, with ashes that can move to the next posting, is the practical route.
The nearest crematorium to Clovis may be an hour or more away, and many families here fold the trip into other errands. That's perfectly respectful. A small pet in a cool box is fine for a short drive; just never leave them in a parked car on a warm day, and keep your written quote with you when you hand them over.
Clovis's population is around 37,127, the 7th-largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover.
Our pages for Plainview (86 miles), Amarillo (94 miles, a larger centre) and Lubbock (97 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Clovis as well.

How New Mexico feels about cremation
In New Mexico, where roughly 70.5%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]
The New Mexico figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Clovis
A deep planter is a good year-round answer for Clovis families who want a burial without fighting the ground. Keep it shaded in summer and sheltered in winter. If you move, it comes with you, and the plant on top becomes a quiet reminder through every season.
For the rodents still in your home, Clovis's extremes mean moving the cage twice a year: away from sunny windows in summer and away from drafts in winter. If you lost one pet to the heat or the cold, a thermometer next to the cage is an inexpensive way to protect the others.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Clovis?
Embrace Pet Insurance lists US communal cremation at $30 to $200 and private at $100 to $500 or more, across all sizes.[6] A rat, hamster or mouse should sit at the very bottom of those ranges, and communal cremation for a pet this light is often the least expensive option in Clovis. Home pickup and an urn can easily cost more than the cremation, so drop off yourself if you can.
The full price table by size is on our New Mexico page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Before you bury or scatter in New Mexico
Scattering a teaspoon of hamster ash raises fewer questions than scattering a dog's, but the same principles apply in New Mexico: ask permission on land you don't own, keep clear of drinking-water sources and busy paths, and pick a calm day. Here's what the rules say locally.
For New Mexico's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the New Mexico guide. Local rules in Clovis can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Clovis
- Take a photo or a clipping of fur, and keep their hammock, wheel or favorite hideout if you'd like to.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: a large, deep pot, your pet near the bottom, plenty of compost and a meaningful plant on top.
- If you'd rather cremate, contact a crematorium directly or ask us to find small-pet options for you.
- Watch surviving cage mates for a week or two; extra attention, time out of the cage and a warm nest all help.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
July in Clovis brings highs in the low 90s, and from December to February nights freeze, often with a biting wind sweeping across the open plains. Spring can bring dust storms that turn the sky brown. In hot weather keep your pet indoors in the coolest room and have it collected, or take it to a provider, before evening, and ask where cremation takes place, as distances out here add up.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Clovis?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 93°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Clovis?
Usually yes. Plainview is about 86 miles away, Amarillo is about 94 miles away and Lubbock is about 97 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Clovis page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of New Mexico residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
My vet near Clovis doesn't see rodents. What now?
That's common in smaller towns. You don't need a vet to confirm death if you're sure, and you can take your pet straight to a crematorium or bury at home. For euthanasia or a sudden loss you're unsure about, the nearest exotics vet may be in a larger centre such as Clovis. Ringing ahead saves a wasted trip.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?
A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
Can I send my pet for cremation in Clovis if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
