Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
With about 77.7%[1] of people in Oregon choosing cremation, local families rarely have to explain why they'd like a pet's ashes home. Even for a hamster, a small vial on a shelf is an ordinary, accepted thing here. Just be realistic about how little comes back, and choose a keepsake sized for a pinch.

Does the Tigard climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 82°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
