Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
About 61.3%[1] of people in Pennsylvania are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Small-pet aftercare has moved the same way, but more slowly: many families still bury hamsters and rats at home, and cremation is chosen mostly by renters, city dwellers and people who expect to move.

Before you bury or scatter in Pennsylvania

Is it safe to bury a rat that was put to sleep?
Only if you can bury deeply. Euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can harm wildlife or pets that dig. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated. Go at least three feet down with a heavy slab on top, or choose cremation instead.
