Tiny pets, real goodbyes: rodent aftercare in Watertown

Watertown, South Dakota

How families in Watertown handle a small pet's death

Watertown is the seat of Codington County and a regional center for northeastern South Dakota, set between Lake Kampeska and Lake Pelican with the Big Sioux River running through. Sioux Falls lies about 100 miles down the interstate, so most families here rely on local veterinarians and regional aftercare services. Ask how far a service will travel, especially if you live at a lake home outside town.

Months of frozen soil rule out a garden grave from late fall until the thaw. Many Watertown families choose cremation, keeping ashes on a shelf or saving them for a spring planting or an evening by the lake. Those in town should read local ordinances before burying anything; farm families often follow whatever tradition their land and relatives have always kept.

The nearest crematorium to Watertown may be an hour or more away, and many families here fold the trip into other errands. That's perfectly respectful. A small pet in a cool box is fine for a short drive; just never leave them in a parked car on a warm day, and keep your written quote with you when you hand them over.

About 23,736 people live in Watertown, which makes it the 5th-largest of the 10 South Dakota communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Brookings (46 miles), Huron (64 miles) and Aberdeen (75 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Watertown routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

53.2%[1]

The NFDA projected South Dakota's cremation rate at 53.2% for 2024.

1.75 years[2]

Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.

1.5-3 years[3]

Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are Merck Veterinary Manual and Embrace Pet Insurance.

A little one at home in Watertown

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little

Funeral customs in South Dakota are still shifting, with roughly 53.2%[1] of people now cremated. For small pets that shows up at the vet's counter: some practices offer cremation by default, while others expect you to take a hamster home. Neither expectation should decide for you. Think about where you'll live in five years and whether you'd like something to hold.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the South Dakota figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Watertown tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Watertown

Some families in Watertown bury in a large planter over winter, kept in a porch or garage, then transfer the plant to the garden in spring. It keeps your pet safe from animals digging in frozen soil and gives the family a small spring ceremony to look forward to.

Torpor catches out a lot of hamster keepers in Watertown every winter. If your hamster's cage sits near a window, a door or an unheated room, and the room dropped well below the mid-60s overnight, there's a real chance they're dormant rather than dead. Warmth, patience and a quiet room are all it takes to find out.

What rodent cremation costs around Watertown

About 6 million[5] US households keep small animals, and only around 18% of them have a hamster,[6] so few Watertown providers build a price list around rodents. That's why our cost calculator starts from the smallest published bands. Use it to see a realistic range before you call, then ask each provider to confirm their figure in writing.

What South Dakota allows for a small pet

Cremating a hamster or rat needs no permit anywhere we cover. The rules that matter for small pets are about burial and scattering: whether you can bury in your own garden, how deep, and how far from water. Here's what applies in South Dakota.

To find your county or city office in South Dakota, start with the official South Dakota local government directory.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the South Dakota level first; our South Dakota rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Watertown or your HOA adds anything.

The first day, one step at a time

  1. Check for torpor first. A hamster that feels stiff and cold after a chilly night may only be in torpor. Cup them in your palms or a towel and keep an eye on them for several hours.
  2. Once you're sure, take your time. Settle them into a tissue-lined tub or a little cardboard box, adding a pinch of the bedding they slept in.
  3. Let cage mates say goodbye. Rats, mice and gerbils often sniff a companion's body for a few minutes, and many keepers feel it helps them.
  4. Keep the box cool. A chilly room will do for a few hours; for a day or two, wrap and bag your pet and use the fridge.
  5. Choose burial or cremation. Burial is free and immediate if you own the ground; communal cremation costs little; private returns a keepsake pinch.
  6. If cremating, ask three questions: is there a small-pet rate, will a separate tray be used, and roughly how much ash comes back?
  7. Clean the cage thoroughly if illness might have been the cause, before any new or surviving pets use it.

Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet

Watertown winters are long and bitter, with January lows around 3°F and freezing weather stretching from November into April. When it is that cold, a garage or three-season porch will preserve your pet for a day or two while the family talks things over and makes decisions together. July highs sit in the low 80s, and summer thunderstorms can build fast over the lakes.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Watertown?

The closest communities we cover are Brookings (about 46 miles), Huron (about 64 miles) and Aberdeen (about 75 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Watertown too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the Watertown climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 82°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Why does the Watertown page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 53.2%[1] of South Dakota residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?

Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[8] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.

Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?

Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.

What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?

A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
