Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
In Texas, around 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematoria are well established as a result, although most still set their lowest price band around cats. A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in Texas, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- Check for torpor first. A hamster that feels stiff and cold after a chilly night may only be in torpor. Cup them in your palms or a towel and keep an eye on them for several hours.

- If cremating, ask three questions: do they charge a lower rate for small pets, does your pet go on their own tray, and about how much ash should you expect back?
- Clean the cage from top to bottom if sickness might have played a part, before any surviving or new pet moves back in.

If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
My chinchilla died on a hot day in Arlington. Was it the heat?
It may well have been. Chinchillas have extremely dense fur and cope poorly once a room climbs past the mid-70s°F (about 24°C); warning signs include lying stretched out, red ears and fast breathing. A vet can't always confirm heatstroke afterwards. What matters now is protecting any cage mates: move them somewhere air-conditioned, add a chilled granite tile and keep the cage out of sunlight.
