The Colony, Texas
Hamster and rat goodbyes in The Colony: the local picture
The Colony's long shoreline trail and lakeside parks such as Stewart Creek Park are part of everyday life for many residents and their animals. Lewisville Lake is federal property, so the Corps of Engineers sets the rules for its banks and water; check before scattering any ashes. Many families decide to keep ashes at home first, then choose a place once they're ready.
The Colony occupies a stretch of Lewisville Lake's eastern shoreline in southern Denton County, about six miles west of Frisco, with the Sam Rayburn Tollway running along its southern edge. Much of the town was laid out as a planned community in the 1970s, so many streets have compact brick homes with rear alley garages. Tell the provider whether to come to the front door or the alley, and mention any gated section.
Not every vet near The Colony treats rats, hamsters or gerbils. If yours doesn't, the nearest exotics vet may be in Frisco or beyond. You don't need a vet to confirm death if you're sure, but it can help after a sudden loss. For euthanasia, a vet who regularly handles pocket pets will make it calmer for everyone.
About 46,196 people live in The Colony, which makes it the 79th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Frisco, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover The Colony run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Lewisville (6 miles, a larger centre), Frisco (6 miles, a larger centre) and Little Elm (7 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Burial, cremation and the Texas tradition
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Texas, at about 55.7%[1], but burial still has deep roots. You'll see both among rodent keepers too. Neither is more proper. For a pet this small, the practical questions are whether you own your garden, whether you can dig deep enough and whether you'd like something to keep.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in The Colony rather than as pet data.
The Colony weather and your small pet
The Colony gets hot: July averages highs around 96°F. Rats, hamsters and degus overheat far faster than people do, and most struggle once a room climbs above about 80°F (27°C). If your pet dies during a hot spell, move them into a small box in the coolest room right away, then into the fridge if burial or cremation is more than a few hours off.
If your rat or hamster died suddenly during a The Colony heatwave, heatstroke is a common cause. It isn't your fault; it happens even in careful homes. If you have other rodents, move their cage away from windows and out of direct sun, add a ceramic tile or a frozen water bottle wrapped in a cloth, and keep the room shaded.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
Embrace Pet Insurance lists US communal cremation at $30 to $200 and private at $100 to $500 or more, across all sizes.[5] A rat, hamster or mouse should sit at the very bottom of those ranges, and communal cremation for a pet this light is often the least expensive option in The Colony. Home pickup and an urn can easily cost more than the cremation, so drop off yourself if you can.

Burial and scattering rules in Texas
Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Texas are below.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers The Colony.
Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat The Colony's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in The Colony
- Stay with your pet for a while if you want to. There's no rush with a small body in a cool room.
- Tell the family, children too, in simple, truthful words, and give anyone who wants one a quiet moment to say goodbye.
- Check the ground. If the soil is stony, sodden or frozen solid, digging deep enough is a struggle, and a planter burial or cremation may suit better.
- Call your vet or a crematorium if cremating, and ask whether they take pocket pets on a separate tray.
- Get the price in writing ahead of the handover, and check it for a collection charge or an urn you never asked for.
- Mark the spot or the day, with a stone, a plant or a note in the calendar, so the goodbye has a place to live.
Keeping their memory alive in The Colony
July is The Colony's hottest month, averaging about 96F, and January nights fall to about 34F. In the warm season, act quickly: settle your pet in the coolest room, lay the body on a bath towel spread over vinyl or tile, and pack frozen gel bags alongside. In winter, an attached garage with the door closed can keep the body cool while you arrange collection the next morning.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in The Colony follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Frisco to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Frisco (roughly 6 miles from The Colony) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the The Colony climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 96°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with The Colony?
The closest communities we cover are Lewisville (about 6 miles), Frisco (about 6 miles) and Little Elm (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve The Colony too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How much does it cost to cremate a hamster in The Colony?
Most US crematoria put a hamster in their smallest weight band, which CareCredit lists at $45 to $75 communal and $100 to $175 private for pets up to 30 lb.[7] Some The Colony providers have a lower pocket-pet price, so ask. Communal is the cheapest cremation option; private costs more but returns a small amount of ash. Home burial costs nothing.
Will I get any ashes back from a mouse or dwarf hamster?
Possibly only a pinch. Cremated remains usually weigh about 3-5% of body weight[4], so a 25-gram mouse leaves well under two grams. With the tiniest pets, a careful provider uses a small tray so the fragile bone can be collected. Ask what they expect to return before paying for private cremation.
