Cremation habits in Texas, and what they mean for a hamster
About 55.7%[2] of people in Texas are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Small-pet aftercare has moved the same way, but more slowly: many families still bury hamsters and rats at home, and cremation is chosen mostly by renters, city dwellers and people who expect to move.

- Check for torpor first. A hamster that feels stiff and cold after a chilly night may only be in torpor. Cup them in your palms or a towel and keep an eye on them for several hours.
- Once you're sure, take your time. Settle them into a tissue-lined tub or a little cardboard box, adding a pinch of the bedding they slept in.
- Let cage mates say goodbye. Rats, mice and gerbils often sniff a companion's body for a few minutes, and many keepers feel it helps them.
- Keep the box cool. A chilly room will do for a few hours; for a day or two, wrap and bag your pet and use the fridge.
- Choose burial or cremation. If the garden is yours, burial costs nothing and can happen today. Communal cremation is cheap, while a private one sends back a pinch of ash to keep.
- If cremating, ask three questions: do they charge a lower rate for small pets, does your pet go on their own tray, and about how much ash should you expect back?
- Clean the cage thoroughly if illness might have been the cause, before any new or surviving pets use it.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
Riverside Park, stretching along the Guadalupe with its old pecan trees, is the green heart of Victoria and a place many families associate with easy afternoons outside with their animals. Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Victoria?
Usually yes. Edna is about 25 miles away, Cuero is about 26 miles away and Port Lavaca is about 26 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Victoria page quote a human cremation rate?

Some are local, and some run from Corpus Christi, about 73 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Victoria and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is my hamster dead or in torpor?
In a cold room, hamsters can drop into torpor: they feel cool and stiff and breathing is very slow. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel in a warm room and watch for a few hours. Look for tiny whisker twitches or slow breaths. If there's no change after several hours of warmth, it's very likely they've died.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[1] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
My vet near Victoria doesn't see rodents. What now?
That's common in smaller towns. You don't need a vet to confirm death if you're sure, and you can take your pet straight to a crematorium or bury at home. For euthanasia or a sudden loss you're unsure about, the nearest exotics vet may be in a larger centre such as Corpus Christi. Ringing ahead saves a wasted trip.
