Farmington, Utah
Burial or cremation for a pocket pet in Farmington
Farmington summers are milder than Salt Lake's, peaking in the upper 80s, while freezing nights run from November into February and fierce canyon winds occasionally roar down from the east. If a pet passes during a warm spell, cool air matters most: settle it in an air-conditioned room, off carpet if possible, and call for collection that day. Windstorms and snow can delay a pickup, so phone early.
Farmington Bay, on the Great Salt Lake shore west of town, draws crowds each winter when bald eagles gather there, and many residents know its dikes and nature trails well. Because it's a managed wildlife area, scattering ashes needs permission. A backyard bed, a pot of perennials on the patio or an urn beside the family photos gives you a spot you control, and you can still visit the eagles each February in your companion's memory.
Feed stores and farm-supply shops around Farmington often sell hamsters, mice and rats, and staff there may be the first to hear when one dies young. If a pet from the same batch died within weeks of coming home, tell the store. Wet tail was the most common specific cause of death in a large UK study of pet hamsters, at 7.88%[1] of deaths, and it can spread among animals still on sale.
Farmington is home to about 26,266 people, the 39th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Farmington are based about 16 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Farmington sits within easy reach of Kaysville (4 miles), Layton (7 miles, a larger centre) and Bountiful (8 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Farmington; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
46.1%[2]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
1.75 years[3]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[4]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[5]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Utah feels about cremation
About 46.1%[2] of people in Utah are cremated, below many other places. You may find your vet more used to families burying small pets than cremating them. If you want a private cremation for your rat or gerbil, ask early which crematorium the practice uses and whether they handle very small animals on a tray.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Farmington tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Farmington
A power cut in January, February, November and December can chill a Farmington home fast, and small rodents feel it first. If a hamster, gerbil or mouse died during an outage or a broken-heater night, the cold may be why, so a torpor check comes first. For the survivors, a deep pile of hay, a wrapped hot-water bottle outside the cage and a blanket over three sides buy time until the heat returns.
Farmington winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, November and December. Before anything else, check it isn't torpor. Hamsters in a chilly room can drop into a deep, cold sleep that looks like death: stiff, cool, barely breathing. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel and watch for a few hours before deciding.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Farmington
About 6 million[6] US households keep small animals, and only around 18% of them have a hamster,[7] so few Farmington providers build a price list around rodents. That's why our cost calculator starts from the smallest published bands. Use it to see a realistic range before you call, then ask each provider to confirm their figure in writing.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Utah
Public parks, nature reserves and shared courtyards are off-limits for pet burial almost everywhere, including Utah. Private land with the owner's permission is the usual answer, and a deep planter counts as your own ground. Here's what else applies locally.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
Start with the Utah rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Farmington's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Step by step for a small pet in Farmington
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, have them settle the body into a lined box, seal that inside a bag and keep it refrigerated.
- Ask them to check the others: water bottles, room temperature and food for any cage mates left in their care.
- Decide from a distance. With a fridge or freezer available, a burial can be postponed until you're back, while a cremation is easy to set up over the phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup when the death came as a surprise, so you can rule out a stuck water bottle, a draft or a room that got too hot.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.
Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Farmington is the Davis County seat, squeezed between the Wasatch foothills and the marshes of Farmington Bay, with Salt Lake City roughly 16 miles to the south. It mixes historic streets near the old courthouse with newer homes around Station Park. Clinics and aftercare services from both Davis and Salt Lake counties serve Farmington; find out from your vet which one they partner with and whether evening home collection is possible.

Questions people ask
Why does the Farmington page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[2] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 16 miles from Farmington) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Farmington?
January, February, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 87°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Farmington?
Usually yes. Kaysville is about 4 miles away, Layton is about 7 miles away and Bountiful is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[1] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a Farmington park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
