Tiny pets, real goodbyes: rodent aftercare in New Berlin
Most price lists in New Berlin start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.

New Berlin, Wisconsin
Burial or cremation for a pocket pet in New Berlin
New Berlin covers a broad stretch of southeastern Waukesha County, a dozen miles from downtown Milwaukee, and a good deal of it still has a semi-rural feel, with homes on larger lots, some wooded parcels and a large industrial park near its eastern side. Many households have long driveways and attached garages. Your clinic can tell you which cremation services come to New Berlin, and whether homes on the city's western edge cost more to reach.
New Berlin's January nights hover near 17F, and freezing weather lasts from December into March. A small companion who passes on a winter night can lie swaddled in the garage or basement until morning without any trouble. Summer is different: when July climbs into the 80s, surround the body with cold packs and book a clinic drop-off or a home pickup before the day is out.
Small towns like New Berlin have one real advantage: your vet probably knows the crematorium staff by name. Ask them honestly whether it's worth cremating a mouse privately, how much ash to expect and whether a communal cremation would be kinder to your budget. A good vet will give you a straight answer.
With roughly 39,953 residents, New Berlin is the 19th-largest of the 50 Wisconsin communities we cover. Milwaukee, roughly 12 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover New Berlin run from there.
For a second opinion on price, West Allis (6 miles), Waukesha (6 miles) and Greenfield (6 miles) are close enough that their providers cover New Berlin routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

What Wisconsin's funeral habits mean for small pets
In Wisconsin, where roughly 70.7%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]
The Wisconsin percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for New Berlin, not as a count of pets.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in New Berlin
A power cut in January, February, March and December can chill a New Berlin home fast, and small rodents feel it first. If a hamster, gerbil or mouse died during an outage or a broken-heater night, the cold may be why, so a torpor check comes first. For the survivors, a deep pile of hay, a wrapped hot-water bottle outside the cage and a blanket over three sides buy time until the heat returns.
Some families in New Berlin bury in a large planter over winter, kept in a porch or garage, then transfer the plant to the garden in spring. It keeps your pet safe from animals digging in frozen soil and gives the family a small spring ceremony to look forward to.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in New Berlin?
Very few US crematoria publish a price just for pocket pets. Most put a hamster in their smallest band, where CareCredit lists private cremation at $100 to $175 for pets up to 30 lb.[6] That's why a private cremation for a 100-gram pet in New Berlin can cost several times what the pet did. Some providers have a lower small-animal rate, so always ask.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Wisconsin
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. The exceptions are home burial and scattering ashes, which Wisconsin and your local council or city may regulate. For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.
Wisconsin keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers New Berlin.
We keep Wisconsin's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Wisconsin rules summary. Before a home burial in New Berlin, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- If an escaped rat, mouse or hamster is found dead in the house, put gloves on, scoop them up in a cloth and set them down in a shoebox.
- Think about poison. If there's any chance they reached rodent bait, tell your vet and keep other pets away from the spot.
- Skip the home grave if bait is possible. An owl, cat or dog that unearths a poisoned body can be poisoned too, which makes cremation the safer choice.
- Clean the place where they were found with hot soapy water.
- Forgive yourself. These animals are born escapologists, and the most attentive keeper can still lose one under the floor or down the back of a sofa.
- Check cage doors and gaps so the rest of the group don't follow; a cheap door clip is all it usually takes.
Small memorials for small pets
The New Berlin Recreation Trail, a former rail line, crosses the city east to west and many owners know it well. Before leaving remains anywhere along a public trail, ask the city what is allowed. Larger lots here make a home memorial easy: a small urn buried beneath a tree, or ashes kept indoors near a sunny window. Renters can use a planter.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with New Berlin?
The closest communities we cover are West Allis (about 6 miles), Waukesha (about 6 miles) and Greenfield (about 6 miles). Providers based in those places often serve New Berlin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in New Berlin?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 82°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why does the New Berlin page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.7%[1] of Wisconsin residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Milwaukee to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Milwaukee (roughly 12 miles from New Berlin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
