Brussels, Brussels-Capital
Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Brussels
Brussels is a dense city of tall terraced houses, many divided into flats, with narrow staircases and few private gardens. That makes home collection the norm when a pet dies, and it helps to tell a provider which floor you are on and whether there is a lift. Because the region is bilingual, you can ask for service in French or Dutch, and most providers will also handle an enquiry in English.
Belgium's damp, changeable climate means cool temperatures for much of the year, which gives you a little breathing room if your pet dies at home. Keep the body in the coolest room, on a blanket, away from radiators. In summer heat waves, which Brussels now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about refrigerated storage if the weekend gets in the way.
Big cities tend to have at least one vet that sees small exotics, often under the banner of an exotics or avian clinic. If your regular vet doesn't treat rats or hamsters, ask them who does. An exotics vet in Brussels will usually also know which local crematorium handles pocket pets carefully, which saves you ringing around on a hard day.
Brussels's population is around 1,209,000.
Brussels sits within easy reach of Antwerp (26 miles) and Ghent (31 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Brussels; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Belgium, at about 67.98%[1], but burial still has deep roots. You'll see both among rodent keepers too. Neither is more proper. For a pet this small, the practical questions are whether you own your garden, whether you can dig deep enough and whether you'd like something to keep.
The Belgium percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Brussels, not as a count of pets.
How Brussels's weather shapes the first day
Cold rooms can put hamsters into torpor, a deep sleep that looks a lot like death. Hot rooms can cause heatstroke in rats and hamsters surprisingly quickly. If you're in Brussels and unsure, warm a cold hamster gently and watch; if a pet died in the heat, check the cage position for any cage mates still with you.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Brussels
Ashes don't always come back quickly in Europe. In Sweden, for example, individual cremations usually come back in two to four weeks.[5] If you live in Brussels and hope to have a keepsake before a family gathering or a move, check the likely return date before booking, and whether going through the vet adds time.

Before you bury or scatter in Brussels-Capital
Scattering a teaspoon of hamster ash raises fewer questions than scattering a dog's, but the same principles apply in Brussels-Capital: ask permission on land you don't own, keep clear of drinking-water sources and busy paths, and pick a calm day. Here's what the rules say locally.
The first day, one step at a time
- Breathe. Nobody needs phoning straight away for an animal this size. Fold a soft cloth or a sheet of paper towel around them and settle them into a little box.
- Talk to the children using the real word, died, rather than saying the pet went to sleep. Invite them to pick the box or to make a drawing to tuck in beside their friend.
- Decide where your pet will rest. A crematorium that covers Brussels, a tall planter, or a spot in your own garden.
- If burying, dig deeper than feels necessary and put a flat stone or slab over the spot so foxes, cats and dogs can't dig.
- If cremating, ring one or two providers, then request the price by email with the words private or communal on it and any container charge spelled out.
- Drop your pet off yourself in a lined box if you can; it usually saves a collection fee.
- Plan a small ritual, and five minutes is enough: say something, add a bloom, and tuck a treat they loved next to them.
Small memorials for small pets
Brussels families make the most of the Bois de la Cambre, the Parc du Cinquantenaire and the edge of the Sonian Forest, and flat-dwellers often keep smaller pets whose whole world was a sunny windowsill or a balcony. Either way, many owners here choose individual cremation so they can bring the ashes home. Ask for written confirmation of the type of cremation, and check whether your commune has its own guidance on pet burial if you do have a garden.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Brussels?
Usually yes. Antwerp is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 31 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Belgium attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Belgium human cremation rate at about 67.98%[1]. We show it on the Brussels page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Brussels?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Brussels provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
How deep should I bury a hamster or rat in Brussels?
There's usually no legal minimum for a pet this small, so go by what keeps animals out: deeper than most people expect. Foxes, dogs, cats and raccoons can smell a shallow grave. Wrap your pet in paper or cotton, avoid plastic, and lay a flat stone or paving slab over the spot. Keep away from wells, streams, ponds and vegetable beds.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in Brussels?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near Brussels, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?
A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
