Nothing in Flanders requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
Your checklist for a small pet in Antwerp
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, have them settle the body into a lined box, seal that inside a bag and keep it refrigerated.
- Ask them to check the others: water bottles, room temperature and food for any cage mates left in their care.
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.

How do Belgium attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Belgium human cremation rate at about 67.98%[1]. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Antwerp?
Usually yes. Brussels is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do I explain a hamster's death to a young child?

Do I need to use the crematorium my Antwerp vet recommends?
