Hamster & Rat Cremation in Flanders: what to know
Garden burial is still how most families in Flanders say goodbye to a hamster or rat, and it's a good choice when done carefully. Foxes, dogs and other animals dig for small bodies, so the advice is always the same: properly deep, wrapped in something that breaks down, and a flat stone on top.
Classroom pets are common in schools across Flanders, and a hamster's death at school raises its own questions: who decides, who tells the children, what happens over a holiday. Our guide for teachers walks through it, and the local pages below cover burial and cremation near each community.
We cover 2 communities in Flanders, from Antwerp and Ghent.

What Flanders's funeral habits mean for small pets
In Flanders, around 67.98%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematoria are well established as a result, although most still set their lowest price band around cats. If you're in Flanders and want a private cremation for a rat or hamster, ask directly whether a pocket-pet rate exists; not every provider advertises one.
We take the Flanders percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse
In Flanders, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first call and will offer collective (communal) or individual cremation. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, collective is often the honest choice. If you want ashes back, ask whether individual cremation of very small animals uses a separate tray.
Ashes don't always come back quickly in Europe. In Sweden, for example, individual cremations usually come back in two to four weeks.[2] If you live in Flanders and hope to have a keepsake before a family gathering or a move, check the likely return date before booking, and whether going through the vet adds time.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland, pets under 2 kg | Ask locally | from EUR 150[3] |
| Germany, all sizes | EUR 85 to 205[4] | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Norway, 1 to 20 kg | from NOK 1,190[5] | NOK 3,790 |

Flanders rules for pocket pets
Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Flanders are below.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Stay with your pet for a while if you want to. There's no rush with a small body in a cool room.
- Tell the family, children too, in simple, truthful words, and give anyone who wants one a quiet moment to say goodbye.
- Check the ground. If the soil is stony, sodden or frozen solid, digging deep enough is a struggle, and a planter burial or cremation may suit better.
- Call your vet or a crematorium if cremating, and ask whether they take pocket pets on a separate tray.
- Get the price in writing ahead of the handover, and check it for a collection charge or an urn you never asked for.
- Mark the spot or the day, with a stone, a plant or a note in the calendar, so the goodbye has a place to live.
Small memorials for small pets
Some Flanders families share a small pet's ashes: a pinch for each child's keepsake, a little under the garden rose. With a rodent there's very little to divide, so plan before collecting the ashes. Our ashes sharing planner shows how far a teaspoon goes and whether a tiny vial for everyone is realistic.

Questions people ask
Do vets in Flanders charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in Flanders?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds. Many schools prefer communal cremation arranged by a nearby vet, because grounds change and not every family is comfortable with a burial on site. Our plan for classroom goodbyes keeps it simple.
How many communities do you cover in Flanders?
We currently have local rodent aftercare guides for 2 communities in Flanders, including Antwerp and Ghent. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, burial rules and what to ask a crematorium about very small pets.
Where can I scatter a small pet's ashes in Flanders?
Private land with permission is simplest. Parks and public spaces often have their own rules. With a pet this small, many families scatter a pinch under a plant in their garden or a planter, and keep a little back in a keepsake vial.
Can two rats who died close together be cremated together?
Yes. Ask for them to be cremated together and returned in one container, or for two private cremations with separate vials. Put your choice in writing and ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
How do I find a vet who sees rats and hamsters in Flanders?
Look for exotics or small-animal clinics, especially in larger places like Antwerp and Ghent. Ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. If your own vet doesn't, they can usually refer you, and that vet will often know which crematorium handles tiny pets with care.
