How families in Ottawa handle a small pet's death
Ottawa ranges from dense neighbourhoods like the Glebe and Centretown to suburbs such as Kanata, Orléans and Barrhaven, and it also includes a surprising amount of farmland within city limits. Many families have a yard, but for months of the year the ground is frozen, so burying a pet at home is often impossible. Most Ottawa owners ask for home collection and a cremation.
Ottawa winters are long and cold, with snow on the ground for months, and summers are warm and humid. In winter you may have a little more time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body in a cool room away from heating. If your pet dies on a road or sidewalk, the city has a reporting route; on private property, the owner is responsible for removal.
When a rat or hamster declines at night in Ottawa, the nearest open clinic is usually an emergency hospital rather than an exotics practice. Emergency teams can give a calm euthanasia to a small rodent even if they rarely treat one; ask whether the vet on shift is comfortable sedating a pet this size first. Afterwards you're free to take your pet home and compare aftercare in the morning.
With roughly 1,017,000 residents, Ottawa is the 2nd-largest of the 15 Ontario communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Kingston (91 miles), Laval (97 miles) and Montreal (103 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Ottawa routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
81.1%[1]
CANA projects the Canadian cremation rate will reach 81.1% by 2030.
1.75 years[2]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are O'Neill et al. 2022, Journal of Small Animal Practice and Embrace Pet Insurance.

How Canada feels about cremation
In Canada, where roughly 81.1%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]
The Canada percentage above is from CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Ottawa, not as a count of pets.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Ottawa
We don't hold detailed weather records for Ottawa, so use your own thermometer. If the room where your pet lived felt cold overnight, roughly below 60°F (15°C), check a hamster for torpor before anything else. If it was hotter than about 80°F (27°C), heat may have played a part, and any other pets need moving somewhere cooler.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Ottawa?
Exotics cover is thin in much of Canada, and an Ottawa family may find the nearest rodent-savvy vet a long drive away. The cost of that trip can outweigh the cremation fee for a hamster. If you're certain your pet has died, you can skip the vet visit and drive them directly to a crematorium, or wait and bury once the ground allows.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Ontario
Cremating a hamster or rat needs no permit anywhere we cover. The rules that matter for small pets are about burial and scattering: whether you can bury in your own garden, how deep, and how far from water. Here's what applies in Ontario.
City of Ottawa publishes Ottawa's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
Across Canada, the ground is frozen for months in most places, so many rodent keepers keep a small pet in the freezer until spring or choose cremation. Few crematoria list a pocket-pet price; the smallest published bands are built around cats. Ask whether a hamster or rat can be cremated privately on a separate tray, and for less than the cat rate.
The rules that apply across Ontario (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Ontario page. Ottawa may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first day, one step at a time
- If an escaped rat, mouse or hamster is found dead in the house, wear gloves, lift them in a cloth and lay them in a shoebox.
- Think about poison. Where rodent bait might have been within reach, let your vet know and steer other pets clear of the area.
- Skip the home grave if bait is possible. An owl, cat or dog that unearths a poisoned body can be poisoned too, which makes cremation the safer choice.
- Clean the place where they were found with hot soapy water.
- Forgive yourself. Rodents are escape artists, and even careful keepers lose one behind a sofa or under the floorboards.
- Check cage doors and gaps so the rest of the group don't follow; a cheap door clip is all it usually takes.
Remembering your little one in Ottawa
Ottawa families use the Rideau Canal paths, the Greenbelt trails and the parks along the Ottawa River in every season, but through the long winter most pets live indoors, and a pet who spent months curled by a heating vent leaves a big gap. Some families ask for ashes back so they can keep them at home or take a small portion to a favourite lookout in spring. Confirm in writing that the cremation is individual.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ottawa?
The closest communities we cover are Kingston (about 91 miles), Laval (about 97 miles) and Montreal (about 103 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ottawa too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Ottawa page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) reports about 81.1%[1] of Canada residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How deep should I bury a hamster or rat in Ottawa?
There's usually no legal minimum for a pet this small, so go by what keeps animals out: deeper than most people expect. Foxes, dogs, cats and raccoons can smell a shallow grave. Wrap your pet in paper or cotton, avoid plastic, and lay a flat stone or paving slab over the spot. Keep away from wells, streams, ponds and vegetable beds.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
Schools usually let the teacher decide, often with parents. A short ceremony and a burial in the school garden, with the head's permission, or communal cremation through a local vet, are the common choices. Our classroom goodbye guide has a simple plan teachers can use in Ottawa or anywhere.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Ottawa?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?
A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
