Hamster and rat aftercare in London, Ontario
Most price lists in London start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.
- Check for torpor before anything else
- Planter burial if you have no garden
- Gentle help when a child is grieving

London, Ontario
What rodent aftercare in London is really like
London, Ontario, is known as the Forest City, and many pets here share homes with big, tree-lined yards in older neighbourhoods like Old South and Wortley Village, or in newer subdivisions on the city's edges. Students and young families also rent apartments near Western University and downtown. In a rental, check who controls the parking and the building door before arranging a collection.
Many London families have seen the same vet for years, and that clinic is often the easiest first call, since most arrange cremation and can keep your pet for a day or two. You can also request quotes independently, particularly if a private cremation with the ashes returned matters to you. Ask for a written total covering collection, cremation and any container.
Hamsters and mice are often a child's first pet in London households, which makes this a child's first goodbye. Let them help choose the box, draw a picture to go inside or pick the spot in the garden. A small ritual today tends to matter far more to a child than the choice between burial and cremation.
London is home to about 422,000 people, the 6th-largest of the 15 Ontario communities we cover. Hamilton, roughly 72 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover London run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Guelph (63 miles), Hamilton (72 miles) and Burlington (77 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
Scattering ashes is a familiar ritual in Canada, where around 81.1%[1] of people are cremated. That suits small pets well: a hamster's teaspoon of ash can be scattered in one moment under a rosebush, in a planter or at a spot the family loves, with nothing left to store. Ask permission first if the place isn't yours.
CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) is where the Canada figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in London tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in London
Whatever London's seasons bring, timing only has to fit two things: keeping a tiny body cool, and choosing a moment when the people who loved your pet can be there. A lined box in the fridge gives you that flexibility, so you can wait for a weekend, a sibling coming home from college or simply a calmer day.

Small-pet cremation prices for London families
Canadian price lists quote in weight bands, and for a rat or mouse the only real question is whether the smallest band has a floor. Ask a London provider three things: the private price for a pet under 1 kg, the communal price, and whether GST or HST is already included in the figure they've given you.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Ontario: Ontario costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Ontario rules for pocket pets
Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Ontario are below.
Across Canada, the ground is frozen for months in most places, so many rodent keepers keep a small pet in the freezer until spring or choose cremation. Few crematoria list a pocket-pet price; the smallest published bands are built around cats. Ask whether a hamster or rat can be cremated privately on a separate tray, and for less than the cat rate.
The rules that apply across Ontario (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Ontario page. London may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly for the euthanasia, and ask whether they sedate small pets first; most do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day so you aren't choosing at the counter: home burial, communal, or private cremation.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding so your pet is calm on the way and comfortable afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay from start to finish. Owners who were present often say it made the guilt lighter in the weeks that followed.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. The drugs remain in the body after death, so choose a spot no animal can dig into and weigh it down with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand where the practice offers it, so there's no queue at the desk and you can simply go.
- Give surviving cage mates a few minutes with your pet's body if you bring them home.
Keeping their memory alive in London
London sits in a snowbelt area, and squalls blowing in off Lake Huron can bring heavy snow with little warning. Clear the front path before a collection if you can, and expect delays on snowy roads. From December into March the ground is frozen, which pushes any backyard burial into spring, and many London families decide cremation is simpler than waiting.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Hamilton to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Hamilton (roughly 72 miles from London) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the London page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) reports about 81.1%[1] of Canada residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from London?
Usually yes. Guelph is about 63 miles away, Hamilton is about 72 miles away and Burlington is about 77 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I send my pet for cremation in London if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in London?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near London, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
Schools usually let the teacher decide, often with parents. A short ceremony and a burial in the school garden, with the head's permission, or communal cremation through a local vet, are the common choices. Our classroom goodbye guide has a simple plan teachers can use in London or anywhere.
