Nothing in Ontario requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
Across Canada, the ground is frozen for months in most places, so many rodent keepers keep a small pet in the freezer until spring or choose cremation. Few crematoria list a pocket-pet price; the smallest published bands are built around cats. Ask whether a hamster or rat can be cremated privately on a separate tray, and for less than the cat rate.
