How Beijing feels about cremation

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Beijing?
Hamsters are a common first pet in flats across much of Asia, and pet funeral providers here often sell packages. Request the smallest package from a Beijing provider and check it still includes returning the ashes. Flowers, photos and a formal viewing are optional extras; for a pocket pet, a quiet moment at home can be enough.

Burial and scattering rules in Beijing
Nothing in Beijing requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
Your checklist for a small pet in Beijing
- Look for signs of life gently. A hamster kept somewhere chilly can slip into torpor, so warm them and give it a few hours before you decide.
- Keep your pet safe and cool in a lined box, away from pets and direct sun.
- Think about euthanasia drugs. If your pet was put to sleep, bury extra deep under a slab, or choose cremation, to protect wildlife.
- Compare two options: a private or communal cremation somewhere near Beijing, and a grave at home. Note the cost of each side by side.
- Consider cage mates who died close together. Some providers will cremate the pair privately and return the ashes in a single vial, so ask.

Can I bury a hamster or rat at home in Beijing?
Usually, if you own the land. Bury deep, wrapped in something biodegradable, away from water, with a stone on top so animals can't dig. Renters should ask the landlord or use a deep planter. City rules, homeowner associations and leases can be stricter than the general rules.
Is private cremation worth it for a mouse or hamster in Beijing?
It's worth it if you want a keepsake, can't bury, or might move. It returns only a pinch to a tablespoon of ash, and can cost several times what the pet did. Communal cremation or a careful home burial are equally respectful choices. Ask any provider whether they use a small tray for tiny pets.
Can a classroom hamster be buried at a school in Beijing?
Sometimes, with the principal's or head teacher's permission and a spot away from play areas and vegetable beds.
