Freiburg, Baden-Wurttemberg
How families in Freiburg handle a small pet's death
Freiburg is a compact, car-light city, where many residents live in apartments in the old town, Wiehre, Stühlinger or the newer districts like Vauban and Rieselfeld, and get around by tram or bicycle. If your pet dies at home and you don't have a car, collection can spare you a difficult journey. When you ask for options, mention your district, which floor you live on and whether a vehicle can stop outside.
Freiburg is known as one of the warmest and sunniest cities in Germany, sheltered by the Black Forest, with hot summer spells and fairly mild winters in the Rhine valley, while the hills above can be snowy. In summer, cool a pet's body quickly: wrap your pet in a towel, place cold packs nearby and use the coolest room. In winter you usually have a little more time to decide.
Not every rodent in Freiburg is tiny. Chinchillas can live up to 20 years[1], according to the Merck Veterinary Manual, and a degu or an older rat weighs many times what a dwarf hamster does. For these larger, longer-lived pets, private cremation returns enough ash for a small keepsake urn, and families who shared a decade with a chinchilla often want that. Ask providers to price by weight, not species.
About 230,000 people live in Freiburg, which makes it the 4th-largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Freiburg are based about 74 miles away in Karlsruhe, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Freiburg often end up using a provider from Karlsruhe (74 miles), Stuttgart (82 miles, a larger centre) and Heidelberg (104 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
76.0%[2]
In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
1.75 years[3]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[4]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[5]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Germany, and what they mean for a hamster
With about 76.0%[2] of people in Germany choosing cremation, local families rarely have to explain why they'd like a pet's ashes home. Even for a hamster, a small vial on a shelf is an ordinary, accepted thing here. Just be realistic about how little comes back, and choose a keepsake sized for a pinch.
That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Freiburg only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Freiburg
Seasons in Freiburg shape the ceremony more than the logistics. A pet this small can be cooled and kept safely for a day or two whatever the weather, so pick a moment when the family can be together and the ground, or the planter, is ready.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Freiburg?
European crematoria almost never list a price for a hamster, but the smallest bands give a guide. One Irish provider lists private cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg,[6] and a German consumer guide puts collective cremation at EUR 85 to 205.[7] Ask a Freiburg provider for their lowest band.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Baden-Wurttemberg: Baden-Wurttemberg costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules for small-pet burial in Baden-Wurttemberg
Nothing in Baden-Wurttemberg requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
In Germany, you can usually bury a small pet on your own land outside water- and nature-protection areas, subject to local conditions. For a hamster or degu, many families go deeper to keep foxes out. A Tierkrematorium offers Einzeleinäscherung (individual) or Sammeleinäscherung (collective); for a pet this small, ask whether a lower Kleintier price applies.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Take a photo or a clipping of fur, and keep their hammock, wheel or favorite hideout if you'd like to.
- Wrap your pet in a material that will rot away, such as cotton, paper or a little cardboard box, rather than a plastic container.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: the deepest, widest pot you can find, your pet low down, compost on top and a plant that means something to you.
- If you'd rather cremate, approach a crematorium yourself, or ask us to find small-pet options and let us do the ringing round.
- Watch surviving cage mates over the next two weeks. More handling, longer free-range time and a snug nest box all make a difference.
Remembering your little one in Freiburg
Many Freiburg families associate a pet with the Schlossberg, the banks of the Dreisam or the forest paths that start almost at the edge of town. A private cremation returns ashes you can keep at home or scatter later, once you've checked the rules for that place. A communal cremation, with no ashes returned, costs less. Garden burial is another route some consider, but local rules apply, so check first.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Karlsruhe to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Karlsruhe (roughly 74 miles from Freiburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Freiburg?
Usually yes. Karlsruhe is about 74 miles away, Stuttgart is about 82 miles away and Heidelberg is about 104 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Freiburg page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[2] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a Freiburg park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[9] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?
A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
