What Germany's funeral habits mean for small pets
In Germany, where roughly 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]

Nothing in Baden-Wurttemberg requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
In Germany, you can usually bury a small pet on your own land outside water- and nature-protection areas, subject to local conditions. For a hamster or degu, many families go deeper to keep foxes out. A Tierkrematorium offers Einzeleinäscherung (individual) or Sammeleinäscherung (collective); for a pet this small, ask whether a lower Kleintier price applies.
A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- If your pet died at the vet, the practice can organize cremation for you, or you can carry them home in a box. Both are normal, and nobody expects an answer while you're standing at reception.
- If it happened at home, move your pet somewhere cool where the household's dogs and cats, however curious, can't get at them.
- If you're unsure it was a death, a vet with small-exotic experience can confirm it, which brings peace of mind after a sudden loss.
- Choose communal or private. For a mouse or dwarf hamster, communal is often the honest choice; for a rat, private returns a heaped tablespoon or so.
- Ask for the small-pet tray specifically when booking private, and get it in writing that no other pet shares the chamber with yours.
- Buy a keepsake sized for a pinch, like a tiny vial or pendant, not a full-size urn.

Why does the Karlsruhe page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Karlsruhe?
