How families in Florence handle a small pet's death
Most Florentines live in apartments, many in centuries-old buildings in the historic centre with steep stone stairs and no lift, while others live in the suburbs or in the hills toward Fiesole. Cars need a permit to enter the historic centre's ZTL, so a van may not reach your door. Tell the provider which piazza or corner a van can reach. Most Florentine vets can also arrange cremation for you.
Florence sits in a bowl surrounded by hills, and summers are very hot, often well above 35°C, while winters are cool and damp. In summer, cool your pet quickly: shutters closed, a tiled floor, a towel and cold packs. Summer tourist traffic also slows movement around the city, so contact your vet or a provider as soon as you can.
Florence usually has a handful of vets and at least one pet crematorium within reach, but not every practice sees rodents. If your vet says they don't treat small exotics, ask who they refer to. That vet is often the best person to confirm a death, talk through euthanasia if it comes to that, and recommend a crematorium that handles tiny pets with care.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial
Only about 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, so burial is the local tradition, and garden burial of small pets is the usual choice here too. It's free and immediate. Just bury deeper than feels necessary and cover the spot with a stone, because wildlife and dogs will find a shallow grave.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Florence?

Rules worth knowing before you dig in Tuscany
Public parks, nature reserves and shared courtyards are off-limits for pet burial almost everywhere, including Tuscany. Private land with the owner's permission is the usual answer, and a deep planter counts as your own ground. Here's what else applies locally.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Breathe. Nobody needs phoning straight away for an animal this size. Fold a soft cloth or a sheet of paper towel around them and settle them into a little box.
- Talk to the children using the real word, died, rather than saying the pet went to sleep. Invite them to pick the box or to make a drawing to tuck in beside their friend.
- Decide where your pet will rest. A crematorium that covers Florence, a tall planter, or a spot in your own garden.
- If burying, dig deeper than feels necessary, then weigh the grave down with a paving slab or flat rock so dogs, cats and foxes can't dig.
- If cremating, ring one or two providers and ask for a written price that says private or communal and lists any container fee.
- Drop your pet off yourself where possible, in a box with a liner; most providers charge extra to collect.
- Plan a small ritual, and five minutes is enough: say something, add a bloom, and tuck a treat they loved next to them.
Small memorials for small pets
A garden grave is rarely realistic in Florence, where most families have a balcony rather than a garden, and Tuscan and municipal rules decide where it is allowed at all. Most Florentines therefore choose cremation, either individually, so the ashes come home, or communally. Will I have to travel to Bologna to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Bologna (roughly 50 miles from Florence) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Italy?
For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Florence follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
How deep should I bury a hamster or rat in Florence?
There's usually no legal minimum for a pet this small, so go by what keeps animals out: deeper than most people expect. Foxes, dogs, cats and raccoons can smell a shallow grave. Wrap your pet in paper or cotton, avoid plastic, and lay a flat stone or paving slab over the spot. Keep away from wells, streams, ponds and vegetable beds.
Is it legal to bury a hamster in my garden in Italy?
In most European countries, burying a small animal on property you own is allowed with conditions: away from water sources, outside protected zones and not if the animal had a notifiable disease. Details differ by country and sometimes by municipality, so check with your town hall or council. If you're renting or in an apartment in Florence, individual or collective cremation through your vet is the usual route.
