What Hiroshima offers when a rat or hamster dies
The river embankments, the parks around the Peace Memorial area and the green hills behind the city are part of daily life in Hiroshima, and many families' memories of a pet are tied to a sunny apartment balcony or a small garden near the water. Many families here choose individual cremation with the bones returned so they can keep them at home for a while. If you want to take part in gathering the bones, say so at the start.
Hiroshima's summers are hot and humid, and the rainy season in early summer brings heavy downpours; the hillside districts have suffered serious landslides in recent years. If a pet dies during hot weather, keep the body cool with wrapped ice packs and arrange cremation quickly. In typhoon season, allow for delays in collection and ask the provider how storms affect their schedule.
Plenty of Hiroshima households don't own a car, and that's fine here. A hamster or mouse fits in a small lined box that travels quietly on a bus or train, so you can hand them to a crematorium or an exotics vet yourself. Phone first: some providers only take drop-offs by appointment, and a few run their small-animal trays on set days rather than every day.

Burial, cremation and the Japan tradition
In Japan, where roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Japan figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Hiroshima tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in Hiroshima
We don't hold detailed weather records for Hiroshima, so use your own thermometer. If the room where your pet lived felt cold overnight, roughly below 60°F (15°C), check a hamster for torpor before anything else. If it was hotter than about 80°F (27°C), heat may have played a part, and any other pets need moving somewhere cooler.

Before you bury or scatter in Japan
Public parks, nature reserves and shared courtyards are off-limits for pet burial almost everywhere, including Japan. Private land with the owner's permission is the usual answer, and a deep planter counts as your own ground. Here's what else applies locally.
In Japan, burying animals in parks, forests or other public places is illegal, so flat-dwellers usually choose cremation. Many pet funeral halls offer kotsuage, where the family gathers the bones with chopsticks; with a hamster, the bones are tiny but often recognisable. Tokyo prices for pets under 5 kg start around JPY 14,300 communal. Ask whether individual cremation returns the remains.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, ask them to place the body in a small lined box, bag it and put it in the fridge.
- Ask them to check the others: water bottles, room temperature and food for any cage mates left in their care.
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup when the death came as a surprise, so you can rule out a stuck water bottle, a draft or a room that got too hot.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.
Remembering your little one in Hiroshima
Hiroshima is built on the delta where the Ota River splits into several channels before reaching the Seto Inland Sea, so much of the city is flat and crossed by bridges, with hillside neighbourhoods rising behind it. Many families live in apartments or tight houses close together. Why does the Hiroshima page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How deep should I bury a hamster or rat in Hiroshima?
There's usually no legal minimum for a pet this small, so go by what keeps animals out: deeper than most people expect. Foxes, dogs, cats and raccoons can smell a shallow grave. Wrap your pet in paper or cotton, avoid plastic, and lay a flat stone or paving slab over the spot. Keep away from wells, streams, ponds and vegetable beds.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a Hiroshima park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in Hiroshima?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near Hiroshima, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
Can I be there when my hamster is cremated?
Some crematoria offer an attended or witnessed cremation, even for small pets. It usually costs more and needs booking ahead. For a pocket pet, many providers can fit it in fairly easily because the cremation itself is short. Ask on your first call to a Hiroshima provider.
What happens to a classroom hamster or rat when it dies?
