How Stockholm feels about cremation

Stockholm rules for pocket pets
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in Stockholm. Local burial and scattering rules follow.
In Sweden, ashes from an individual cremation normally take two to four weeks to come back, sometimes longer.[2] For a hamster or rat, ask your vet whether a collective cremation would suit you better, or bury on your own land if you own it, deep and away from water, with a stone over the spot.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Stockholm
- If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, have them settle the body into a lined box, seal that inside a bag and keep it refrigerated.
- Ask them to check the others: water bottles, room temperature and food for any cage mates left in their care.
- Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
- If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
- Ask for a photo of the cage setup if the death was unexpected; heat, drafts or a jammed water bottle are worth ruling out.
- Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, even if the body has already gone: scattering ashes, planting something or looking through photos together.
Small memorials for small pets
Freeze-drying is sometimes offered for small pets, and it does keep a rat or hamster looking as they did. It's slow and expensive: one industry report says small pets typically take three to six months,[8] and one UK guide puts hamster freeze-drying at £300 to £500.[9] Most Stockholm families choose a photo, a paw print or a tiny vial instead, but it's a real option if it matters to you.
