When a small pet dies in Stockholm: burial or cremation
Most price lists in Stockholm start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.

Stockholm, Sweden
What Stockholm offers when a rat or hamster dies
Stockholm is built across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and most people in the inner city live in apartment buildings, often without a lift in the older blocks of Södermalm and Vasastan. Burying a pet at home is rarely an option here, so home collection and cremation is the usual choice. Mention stairs, entry codes and parking when you get in touch, since these affect how collection works.
Stockholm families make the most of Djurgården, the waterfront paths and the forests at the edge of the city, and many spend summers in the archipelago. Pets are often part of all of it, from the summer cottage to a sunny balcony in town. Many owners here ask for individual cremation so the ashes can come home or go to a place that mattered. Confirm the type of cremation in writing.
When a rat or hamster declines at night in Stockholm, the nearest open clinic is usually an emergency hospital rather than an exotics practice. Emergency teams can give a calm euthanasia to a small rodent even if they rarely treat one; ask whether the vet on shift is comfortable sedating a pet this size first. Afterwards you're free to take your pet home and compare aftercare in the morning.

Burial, cremation and the Sweden tradition
Cremation is widely accepted in Sweden, where about 84.69%[1] of people are cremated. That familiarity helps if you're a renter or live in a flat: cremation is the easy, portable choice when you can't dig. If you do have a garden, though, a deep burial remains free, quick and every bit as respectful.
The Sweden figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Stockholm
Whatever Stockholm's seasons bring, timing only has to fit two things: keeping a tiny body cool, and choosing a moment when the people who loved your pet can be there. A lined box in the fridge gives you that flexibility, so you can wait for a weekend, a sibling coming home from college or simply a calmer day.

Paying for a pocket pet's goodbye in Stockholm
Across Europe, garden burial of small pets on your own land is widely allowed with conditions, and many families in Stockholm choose it for rodents. If you rent or live in a flat, cremation is the portable alternative. The table shows the closest published small-pet prices from several countries.

Before you bury or scatter in Sweden
Nothing in Sweden requires you to report a hamster's or rat's death, register it or obtain a certificate. The rules below cover only where a body or ashes may go. If a crematorium offers a certificate of cremation, treat it as a keepsake rather than a legal document; you can take it or leave it.
In Sweden, ashes from an individual cremation normally take two to four weeks to come back, sometimes longer.[6] For a hamster or rat, ask your vet whether a collective cremation would suit you better, or bury on your own land if you own it, deep and away from water, with a stone over the spot.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- If your pet died at the vet, the practice can organize cremation for you, or you can carry them home in a box. Both are normal, and nobody expects an answer while you're standing at reception.
- If it happened at home, move your pet somewhere cool where the household's dogs and cats, however curious, can't get at them.
- If you're unsure it was a death, a vet with small-exotic experience can confirm it, which brings peace of mind after a sudden loss.
- Choose communal or private. With a dwarf hamster or a mouse, communal is usually the sensible answer; a rat is big enough that private cremation gives back roughly a heaped tablespoon.
- Ask for the small-pet tray specifically when booking private, and get it in writing that no other pet shares the chamber with yours.
- Buy a keepsake sized for a pinch, like a tiny vial or pendant, not a full-size urn.
Remembering your little one in Stockholm
Stockholm's winters are long and dark, with cold snaps and snow, while summers are short and light, with long evenings. In winter a cool room gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body away from radiators and on a blanket. Around midsummer and the July holiday weeks, when much of Sweden is on holiday, ask about timing and storage.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Stockholm follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a Stockholm park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
Can I send my pet for cremation in Stockholm if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Stockholm?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. For a rodent it's usually done by an exotics vet or a diagnostic lab, and it costs more than cremation. Ask before freezing your pet, because freezing can hide some findings. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?
Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.
How much does rat or hamster cremation cost in Stockholm?
Few providers list a rodent price, so a rat or hamster is usually charged at the smallest band for cats and small pets, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than individual, and a garden or planter burial is free. Ask any Stockholm provider for a written quote that says which it is and lists any container fee.
