Alamo, California
Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Alamo
Plenty of Alamo families have room for a quiet garden tribute: a flat stone below a spreading oak, a rose bed, a bench with a view of Mount Diablo. Others keep the ashes close and scatter a small portion somewhere the family spent time together, such as along the Iron Horse Regional Trail, built on a former rail line through the valley. Regional parks set their own conditions on scattering, so read those first, and choose private cremation if you want every bit of ash returned.
Alamo is an unincorporated community in the San Ramon Valley of Contra Costa County, strung along Interstate 680 between Walnut Creek and Danville, with Oakland about 14 miles west through the hills. Homes sit on generous lots, often behind gates and long driveways, so a home collection is simple once the driver has the gate code and knows which door to use. Because Alamo has no town government of its own, questions about an animal found on a road here go to Contra Costa County.
Many families in and around Alamo cremate for one simple reason: they might move. A garden grave stays with the house; a tiny vial of ash comes with you. If that matters, ask the crematorium serving Oakland whether they use a small tray for pocket pets, so there's something meaningful to return.
Alamo's population is around 14,000, the 277th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Oakland, roughly 14 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Alamo run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Danville (3 miles, a larger centre), Walnut Creek (4 miles, a larger centre) and Lafayette (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Alamo routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
70.5%[1]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
1.75 years[2]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[3]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on O'Neill et al. 2022, Journal of Small Animal Practice and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
In California, where roughly 70.5%[1] of people are cremated, providers are used to requests for keepsakes, and many sell glass or jewelry pieces that hold a little ash. For a rodent, keep the order tiny, but don't assume smaller means cheaper: by our estimate, a 1 oz keepsake urn can cost about a third more than a full-size wooden urn from the same provider.[5]
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Alamo rather than as pet data.
How Alamo's weather shapes the first day
Heat also changes a garden burial. Hard, dry ground in July can make it tough to dig a small grave deep enough, and a shallow one will draw ants, flies and animals. Water the spot the evening before, dig in the cool of the morning, and put a flat stone over the top when you're done.
A body this small changes quickly in heat. In Alamo's warmest weeks, don't leave your hamster or mouse in the cage, on a windowsill or in a parked car while you decide. Wrap them in a paper towel, place them in a small box, and keep the box in the fridge (never next to food, and in a sealed bag). That gives you a calm day or two.

Small-pet cremation prices for Alamo families
About 6 million[6] US households keep small animals, and only around 18% of them have a hamster,[7] so few Alamo providers build a price list around rodents. That's why our cost calculator starts from the smallest published bands. Use it to see a realistic range before you call, then ask each provider to confirm their figure in writing.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in California
A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in California, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. The general burial and scattering rules follow.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Alamo, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Your checklist for a small pet in Alamo
- Take a photo or a clipping from their coat, and hold on to the wheel, hammock or hideout they loved if that feels right.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge when you can't bury or hand them over within the next few hours, and check with the provider before using the freezer.
- If renting, choose a planter: a large, deep pot, your pet near the bottom, plenty of compost and a meaningful plant on top.
- If you'd rather cremate, contact a crematorium directly or ask us to find small-pet options for you.
- Watch surviving cage mates over the next two weeks. More handling, longer free-range time and a snug nest box all make a difference.
Ways to mark a short, bright life
Summer in Alamo runs hot, with July afternoons averaging close to 89F, while winter nights settle in the high 30s without a hard freeze. Should a pet die in the house during a heat spell, move them onto tile or into the air-conditioned part of the home, drape a thin cotton sheet over them, and slide a couple of cold packs, each inside a dish towel, under the chest. In this valley heat, same-day collection is the sensible plan rather than waiting until the next morning.

Questions people ask
Does the Alamo climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Alamo?
The closest communities we cover are Danville (about 3 miles), Walnut Creek (about 4 miles) and Lafayette (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Alamo too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[1] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Alamo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 14 miles from Alamo) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?
Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.
Will my vet in Alamo keep my rat until the crematorium collects?
Most practices that offer cremation have a freezer or cold store for exactly this, and small pets wait there for the next collection, which in smaller towns may run weekly. Ask how your pet will be labeled and stored, and when the next pickup is due. If you'd rather not wait, you can usually take your pet to the crematorium serving Oakland yourself.
