Caring for your rat, hamster or gerbil in Ontario after they die
A hamster or mouse in Ontario can be buried today for nothing or cremated for a keepsake pinch of ash. Here's how to choose honestly, and what each path really costs.
- Realistic ash amounts for a pet under a pound
- Ask for a small-pet rate, not a dog band

Ontario, California
Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like Ontario
Summers in Ontario are long and hot, with August afternoons in the mid-80s and often well beyond, and the valley can hold heat into the evening. If your pet dies at home in warm months, move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel and place ice packs wrapped in cloth along their back. In the mild winters you have more breathing room, but it still helps to decide on cremation within a day.
Many Ontario families have roots in several places, and it's common for ashes to be split so relatives in other towns or countries can keep a share. A private cremation, where your pet is cremated alone, is the option to ask for if you want to divide the remains or keep all of them. Communal cremation costs less and suits families who'd rather not keep ashes at home.
Not every rodent in Ontario is tiny. Chinchillas can live up to 20 years[1], according to the Merck Veterinary Manual, and a degu or an older rat weighs many times what a dwarf hamster does. For these larger, longer-lived pets, private cremation returns enough ash for a small keepsake urn, and families who shared a decade with a chinchilla often want that. Ask providers to price by weight, not species.
Ontario is home to about 187,013 people, the 24th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Fontana, about 12 miles (20 km) away, which is where some providers serving Ontario are based.
Ontario sits within easy reach of Montclair (3 miles), Upland (4 miles) and Rancho Cucamonga (4 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Ontario; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
70.5%[2]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
1.75 years[3]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[4]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[5]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
About 70.5%[2] of people in California are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, crematoria compete for business, which can help you. Ask for a small-pet price for your rat or gerbil; with plenty of providers nearby, someone is likely to quote below the standard cat band.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Ontario, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Ontario
Whatever Ontario's seasons bring, timing only has to fit two things: keeping a tiny body cool, and choosing a moment when the people who loved your pet can be there. A lined box in the fridge gives you that flexibility, so you can wait for a weekend, a sibling coming home from college or simply a calmer day.

Rodent aftercare prices near Ontario, honestly compared
Very few US crematoria publish a price just for pocket pets. Most put a hamster in their smallest band, where CareCredit lists private cremation at $100 to $175 for pets up to 30 lb.[6] That's why a private cremation for a 100-gram pet in Ontario can cost several times what the pet did. Some providers have a lower small-animal rate, so always ask.

Rules worth knowing before you dig in California
Scattering a teaspoon of hamster ash raises fewer questions than scattering a dog's, but the same principles apply in California: ask permission on land you don't own, keep clear of drinking-water sources and busy paths, and pick a calm day. Here's what the rules say locally.

Your checklist for a small pet in Ontario
- Book a vet who handles rodents regularly for the euthanasia, and ask whether they sedate small pets first; most do.
- Decide on aftercare before the day arrives, whether private cremation, communal, or burial at home, rather than working it out at reception.
- Bring a small lined box and a scrap of familiar bedding to settle your pet during the journey and to lay them on afterwards.
- Ask whether you can stay for the whole appointment. Many owners find that being there eases the guilt later.
- If you plan a home burial, tell the vet. Euthanasia medication stays in a pet's tissues, so pick a place animals can't reach and cover it with a heavy slab.
- Settle the bill beforehand where the practice offers it, so there's no queue at the desk and you can simply go.
- Give surviving cage mates a few minutes with your pet's body if you bring them home.
Keepsakes and memorials that suit a tiny pet
Ontario sits in the middle of the Inland Empire, where older neighborhoods around downtown and Euclid Avenue give way to newer tract homes in the south of the city. Most pets here live in single-family houses with a yard, which makes a home farewell easy to arrange. If you'd like a pickup, mention whether you're near the airport or off the busy freeway corridors, since traffic on the 10, 15 and 60 can stretch a short trip.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ontario?
The closest communities we cover are Montclair (about 3 miles), Upland (about 4 miles) and Rancho Cucamonga (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ontario too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Ontario page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[2] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Ontario actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Fontana, about 12 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Ontario and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do I explain a hamster's death to a young child?
Use plain words like "died" rather than "went to sleep", which can make bedtime frightening. Keep it short and honest, then let your child help: choosing the box, drawing a picture, picking a plant for the grave. Our guide to talking with children about losing a rodent has age-by-age wording.
How long until I get my rat's ashes back in Ontario?
Many families wait about one to two weeks. In a smaller town where pets travel to a regional crematorium, it can take longer because collections run on set days. Ask for an expected return date when you book, and whether you can collect the ashes yourself to save time.
How do I find a vet who treats rats and hamsters in Ontario?
Ask your regular vet first; if they don't see small exotics, they'll know who does. Search for exotics, avian or small-animal clinics near Ontario, and when you call, ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. That vet is also the best person to recommend a crematorium that handles pocket pets carefully.
