Rodent cremation in Key West
Most price lists in Key West start at a small-dog weight band, so a 100-gram pet can cost more to cremate than it did to buy. We explain when that's worth it and when it isn't.

Key West, Florida
Burial or cremation for a pocket pet in Key West
Key West is famous for its animals, from the six-toed cats at the Hemingway Home to the chickens that roam the streets. Burial is difficult here, since the island is coral rock with water close beneath and even the city cemetery uses above-ground tombs, so most families choose cremation. A little ash scattered at sea off the island, or a potted bougainvillea on the porch, makes a fitting memorial.
Key West is frost-free, with January lows around 66F and August highs above 90F, so there is no cool season to buy extra time. As soon as your pet has died, get them into air conditioning straight away, lay them on a towel, surround them with ice packs wrapped in cloth, and find out if your clinic can hold them while collection is arranged. In a hurricane evacuation, the whole chain can empty out, so plan early.
Not every vet near Key West treats rats, hamsters or gerbils. If yours doesn't, the nearest exotics vet may be in Key West or beyond. You don't need a vet to confirm death if you're sure, but it can help after a sudden loss. For euthanasia, a vet who regularly handles pocket pets will make it calmer for everyone.
Key West's population is around 24,999, the 103rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover.
Our pages for Homestead (105 miles, a larger centre), Naples (110 miles) and Cutler Bay (115 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Key West as well.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for a hamster
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, crematoria compete for business, which can help you. Ask for a small-pet price for your rat or gerbil; with plenty of providers nearby, someone is likely to quote below the standard cat band.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Key West weather and your small pet
Chinchillas and degus are the rodents least built for Key West's summers. A chinchilla's dense coat traps heat, and a room nearing 91°F can become dangerous within an hour or two. If you've lost one in August, a fan alone won't protect the others; air conditioning, a chilled granite slab and a shaded room are what experienced keepers rely on.
Key West gets hot: August averages highs around 91°F. Rats, hamsters and degus overheat far faster than people do, and most struggle once a room climbs above about 80°F (27°C). If your pet dies during a hot spell, move them into a small box in the coolest room right away, then into the fridge if burial or cremation is more than a few hours off.

Small-pet cremation prices for Key West families
Most Key West families pay their vet, not the crematorium. That's convenient, but the vet adds a handling margin and usually works with one provider. For a pocket pet you can often go direct: ask for the private price with a small tray, the communal price, and whether a basic container is included.
The full price table by size is on our Florida page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Florida rules for pocket pets
Rodents are too small to trigger most of the rules written for livestock and larger pets, so aftercare in Florida is mostly a matter of good sense. The points that do apply are who owns the ground, whether your pet was euthanized and whether any illness could spread. The local burial and scattering notes for Florida follow.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Key West.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Key West or your HOA adds anything.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Take a photo or a clipping of fur, and keep their hammock, wheel or favorite hideout if you'd like to.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.
- If renting, choose a planter: a large, deep pot, your pet near the bottom, plenty of compost and a meaningful plant on top.
- If you'd rather cremate, approach a crematorium yourself, or ask us to find small-pet options and let us do the ringing round.
- Watch surviving cage mates over the next two weeks. More handling, longer free-range time and a snug nest box all make a difference.
Remembering your little one in Key West
Key West sits at the far end of the Overseas Highway in Monroe County, roughly 160 miles and several hours' drive from Miami, and that distance shapes pet aftercare here more than anything else. Homes are mostly tightly packed conch cottages, apartments and condos in Old Town and New Town, plus Navy housing. Ask any provider whether cremation happens in the Keys or on the mainland, and how long the ashes take to come back down US 1.

Questions people ask
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Key West page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Key West climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Key West?
The closest communities we cover are Homestead (about 105 miles), Naples (about 110 miles) and Cutler Bay (about 115 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Key West too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
My vet near Key West doesn't see rodents. What now?
That's common in smaller towns. You don't need a vet to confirm death if you're sure, and you can take your pet straight to a crematorium or bury at home. For euthanasia or a sudden loss you're unsure about, the nearest exotics vet may be in a larger centre such as Key West. Ringing ahead saves a wasted trip.
Is water cremation (aquamation) available for small pets near Key West?
Some pet providers offer aquamation, which uses water and alkali instead of flame. Availability is patchy, and for a pet this small the amount returned is still very small. If it matters to you, ask local crematoria directly and compare it with flame cremation using our aftercare options comparison.
