Hamster & Rat Cremation in Georgia: what to know
Weather matters more than people expect for small rodents in Georgia. Cold rooms can send hamsters into torpor, a deep sleep that looks like death, and heat can cause heatstroke in rats and degus within hours. Frozen or baked ground also makes the deep grave a small pet needs hard to dig at certain times of year.
Classroom pets are common in schools across Georgia, and a hamster's death at school raises its own questions: who decides, who tells the children, what happens over a holiday. Our guide for teachers walks through it, and the local pages below cover burial and cremation near each community.
We cover 68 communities in Georgia, from Atlanta, Columbus and Augusta to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Georgia: summer highs reach about 94°F in Augusta, while winter lows average 31°F in Roswell. In 0% of the Georgia communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

Cremation habits in Georgia, and what they mean for a hamster
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Georgia, at about 54.2%[1], but burial still has deep roots. You'll see both among rodent keepers too. Neither is more proper. For a pet this small, the practical questions are whether you own your garden, whether you can dig deep enough and whether you'd like something to keep.
We take the Georgia percentage from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
What rodent cremation costs around Georgia
Very few US crematoria publish a price just for pocket pets. Most put a hamster in their smallest band, where CareCredit lists private cremation at $100 to $175 for pets up to 30 lb.[2] That's why a private cremation for a 100-gram pet in Georgia can cost several times what the pet did. Some providers have a lower small-animal rate, so always ask.
Remember that US pet cremation is lightly regulated: one directory counts only 9 states[3] with pet-crematory licensing or consumer laws. In Georgia, that makes a written quote even more useful. Ask it to say private or communal, name the tray used for small pets and list any collection or container fee.
| Option | Typical US price | What you get back |
|---|---|---|
| Communal, pets up to 30 lb | $45 to $75 | No ashes |
| Private, pets up to 30 lb | $100 to $175 | A pinch to a tablespoon |
| Partitioned (shared chamber, kept apart) | $50 to $250 | Some ashes, may mix |
| Garden or deep planter burial | Free, or the price of a pot | A place to visit |
| Source | CareCredit; partitioned from Embrace | Ask for a small-pet rate |

Georgia rules for pocket pets
Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Georgia are below.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Georgia local government directory.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Check for torpor first. A hamster that feels stiff and cold after a chilly night may only be in torpor. Cup them in your palms or a towel and keep an eye on them for several hours.
- Once you're sure, take your time. Lay your pet in a small cardboard box or tissue-lined container with a little of their bedding.
- Let cage mates say goodbye. Rats, mice and gerbils often sniff a companion's body for a few minutes, and many keepers feel it helps them.
- Keep the box cool. A cool room is fine for a few hours; wrapped and bagged in the fridge gives you a day or two.
- Choose burial or cremation. If the garden is yours, burial costs nothing and can happen today. Communal cremation is cheap, while a private one sends back a pinch of ash to keep.
- If cremating, ask three questions: is there a small-pet rate, will a separate tray be used, and roughly how much ash comes back?
- Clean the cage from top to bottom if sickness might have played a part, before any surviving or new pet moves back in.
Keeping their memory alive in Georgia
Freeze-drying is sometimes offered for small pets, and it does keep a rat or hamster looking as they did. It's slow and expensive: one industry report says small pets typically take three to six months,[5] and one UK guide puts hamster freeze-drying at £300 to £500.[6] Most Georgia families choose a photo, a paw print or a tiny vial instead, but it's a real option if it matters to you.

Questions people ask
Can I bury a hamster or rat at home in Georgia?
Usually, if you own the land. Bury deep, wrapped in something biodegradable, away from water, with a stone on top so animals can't dig. Renters should ask the landlord or use a deep planter. City rules, homeowner associations and leases can be stricter than the general rules.
Do vets in Georgia charge for euthanasia of a hamster or rat?
Yes, though for small pets it's usually one of the lower euthanasia fees on a price list. Ask whether sedation, the consultation and aftercare are included or listed separately, and whether communal cremation can be added at the same visit. A written total before the day avoids surprises when you're upset.
How do I find a vet who sees rats and hamsters in Georgia?
Look for exotics or small-animal clinics, especially in larger places like Atlanta, Columbus and Augusta. Ask whether a vet on staff regularly treats rodents. If your own vet doesn't, they can usually refer you, and that vet will often know which crematorium handles tiny pets with care.
What if my rodent may have eaten rat poison in Georgia?
Call a vet straight away if your pet is still alive. If they've died, don't bury them where a dog, cat or bird of prey could dig them up, because the poison can pass up the food chain. Cremation avoids that risk; let the provider know what happened.
How much does rodent cremation cost in Georgia?
Most providers across Georgia charge a hamster or rat at their smallest weight band, or a little less. Communal cremation is much cheaper than private, and home burial is free. Ask each provider for a written quote, whether a small-pet rate applies and whether a basic container is included.
Is cremation common in Georgia?
For people, 54.2%[1] of deaths in Georgia end in cremation, and pet crematoria are easier to find where that rate is higher. For hamsters and rats, though, home burial is still very common because it's free and immediate. Both are normal choices.
