Saying goodbye to a hamster, rat or mouse in Ottawa

Ottawa, Illinois

How families in Ottawa handle a small pet's death

Winters in the Illinois Valley are long and cold, and summers are humid and warm. A pet who dies in the heat should stay indoors on a washable blanket, with frozen packs placed around it, until collection, ideally the same day. Through the frozen months a garage or enclosed porch does the job overnight. If a summer thunderstorm knocks out the power, move the body to the basement, which stays coolest.

Ottawa is a gateway to Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock state parks, and the Illinois and Michigan Canal towpath runs through town, so many residents have favorite outdoor places once shared with an animal. State parks set their own rules on scattering, so ask the park office before bringing ashes. Plenty of people instead keep a little in a locket and simply return to those trails to remember.

Home burial is the most common choice for small pets around Ottawa, especially where families have land. It's free and immediate. The main risk out here is wildlife: foxes, coyotes, raccoons and farm dogs will dig for a small body. A good depth, a flat stone or slab on top and a spot well away from wells and streams keeps things safe.

Ottawa is home to about 18,684 people, the 132nd-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 71 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ottawa run from there.

Our pages for Yorkville (29 miles), Shorewood (33 miles) and Oswego (34 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Ottawa as well.

60.2%[1]

The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.

1.75 years[2]

Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.

1.5-3 years[3]

Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What Illinois's funeral habits mean for small pets

Cremation accounts for about 60.2%[1] of deaths in Illinois, so families here often have relatives on both sides of the burial-or-cremation question. If grandparents want to bury the family hamster and a teenager wants ashes, you can do both: cremate privately, then bury the small container or scatter the ash in the garden later.

We take the Illinois rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Ottawa, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

How Ottawa's weather shapes the first day

Seasons in Ottawa shape the ceremony more than the logistics. A pet this small can be cooled and kept safely for a day or two whatever the weather, so pick a moment when the family can be together and the ground, or the planter, is ready.

What rodent cremation costs around Ottawa

Very few US crematoria publish a price just for pocket pets. Most put a hamster in their smallest band, where CareCredit lists private cremation at $100 to $175 for pets up to 30 lb.[5] That's why a private cremation for a 100-gram pet in Ottawa can cost several times what the pet did. Some providers have a lower small-animal rate, so always ask.

The Illinois price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Before you bury or scatter in Illinois

Scattering a teaspoon of hamster ash raises fewer questions than scattering a dog's, but the same principles apply in Illinois: ask permission on land you don't own, keep clear of drinking-water sources and busy paths, and pick a calm day. Here's what the rules say locally.

Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ottawa.

The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Ottawa's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Ottawa

  1. Stay with your pet for a while whenever you need. A body this small keeps well in a cool room; nothing is urgent.
  2. Tell the family, children too, in simple, truthful words, and give anyone who wants one a quiet moment to say goodbye.
  3. Check the ground. If the soil is stony, sodden or frozen solid, digging deep enough is a struggle, and a planter burial or cremation may suit better.
  4. Call your vet or a crematorium if cremating, and ask whether they take pocket pets on a separate tray.
  5. Get the price in writing before handing your pet over, including any urn or collection fee you don't need.
  6. Mark the spot or the day, with a stone, a plant or a note in the calendar, so the goodbye has a place to live.

Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close

Ottawa sits where the Fox River empties into the Illinois, the LaSalle County seat and a town of about 18,000 roughly 70 miles southwest of Chicago. Many houses are older frame and brick homes on the hilly streets near the rivers, with newer ones on the outskirts. Because providers serving the Illinois Valley may be based in another town, ask about the drive and any added fee before arranging a home pickup.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ottawa?

Usually yes. Yorkville is about 29 miles away, Shorewood is about 33 miles away and Oswego is about 34 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Illinois?

For people, yes: about 60.2%[1] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ottawa follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 71 miles from Ottawa) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is it safe to bury a rat that was put to sleep?

Only if you can bury deeply. Euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can harm wildlife or pets that dig. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated. Go at least three feet down with a heavy slab on top, or choose cremation instead.

Can I send my pet for cremation in Ottawa if it died of an illness?

Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.

What urn should I buy for a rat or hamster?

A keepsake vial, mini urn or pendant, not a full-size pet urn. A Syrian hamster leaves about a teaspoon or two of ash; a fancy rat a heaped tablespoon or so. Our urn size calculator turns your pet's weight into a volume, so you don't pay for space you'll never fill.
