Hamster and rat aftercare in Highland, Indiana

Highland, Indiana

Hamster and rat goodbyes in Highland: the local picture

The Little Calumet River forms Highland's northern edge, with levee trails running along it, and Wicker Memorial Park is a long-standing green space where many families spend time outdoors. Scattering ashes by the levee or in a park may need the managing agency's approval, so ask first. On Highland's smaller lots, a shade-garden corner or a pot of perennials on the back steps can become the memorial.

Highland is a compact, mostly residential town in northern Lake County, about 25 miles from downtown Chicago, bordered by Munster, Hammond and Griffith. Much of its housing dates from the 1950s and 60s: brick ranches, Cape Cods and bungalows on modest lots, with a handful of apartment complexes near the main roads. Northwest Indiana providers reach Highland easily, often the same day, but it's still sensible to get the full price in writing.

Small towns like Highland have one real advantage: your vet probably knows the crematorium staff by name. Ask them honestly whether it's worth cremating a mouse privately, how much ash to expect and whether a communal cremation would be kinder to your budget. A good vet will give you a straight answer.

Highland is home to about 23,409 people, the 44th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Highland run from there.

Families in Highland often end up using a provider from Munster (2 miles), Schererville (4 miles) and Lansing (5 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Cremation habits in Indiana, and what they mean for a hamster

Cremation accounts for about 56.5%[1] of deaths in Indiana, so families here often have relatives on both sides of the burial-or-cremation question. If grandparents want to bury the family hamster and a teenager wants ashes, you can do both: cremate privately, then bury the small container or scatter the ash in the garden later.

For the Indiana figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Highland rather than as pet data.

Seasonal timing for hamsters and rats in Highland

Torpor catches out a lot of hamster keepers in Highland every winter. If your hamster's cage sits near a window, a door or an unheated room, and the room dropped well below the mid-60s overnight, there's a real chance they're dormant rather than dead. Warmth, patience and a quiet room are all it takes to find out.

Snowy roads around Highland can delay a vet visit or a crematorium drop-off. With a pet this small, that's manageable: keep them cool and wrapped, and go when it's safe. If your hamster or rat is very old or ill and a storm is forecast, ask your vet now what they'd suggest, rather than on the night.

Small-pet cremation prices for Highland families

Most Highland families pay their vet, not the crematorium. That's convenient, but the vet adds a handling margin and usually works with one provider. For a pocket pet you can often go direct: ask for the private price with a small tray, the communal price, and whether a basic container is included.

What Indiana allows for a small pet

Rental agreements, homeowner associations and apartment rules often matter more for a hamster than state or national law. If you don't own the ground, ask before digging, or choose a planter or cremation. The wider rules for Indiana are below.

The Indiana page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Highland's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Step by step for a small pet in Highland

  1. If a sitter or neighbor finds your pet while you're away, have them settle the body into a lined box, seal that inside a bag and keep it refrigerated.
  2. Ask them to check the others: are the remaining cage mates fed, is the water bottle running, is the room too hot or too cold?
  3. Decide from a distance. Burial can wait for your return if the fridge or freezer is an option; cremation can be arranged by phone.
  4. If you'd like cremation before you're back, check that the provider will accept your pet from the sitter, and have the price emailed to you.
  5. Ask for a photo of the cage setup when the death came as a surprise, so you can rule out a stuck water bottle, a draft or a room that got too hot.
  6. Plan a proper goodbye for when you're home, whether or not the body is still there: scatter the ashes, put a plant in the ground or sit down with the photos as a family.

Keeping their memory alive in Highland

Winter in Highland lasts from November into March, and January lows fall to around 15 degrees, cold enough that a detached garage or back porch can hold a pet's body overnight if the provider can't come until morning. Humid July days in the mid-80s are the opposite problem. Choose the coolest room in the house, lay your companion on an old sheet, and slide wrapped cold packs underneath.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 25 miles from Highland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Highland?

Usually yes. Munster is about 2 miles away, Schererville is about 4 miles away and Lansing is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Indiana?

For people, yes: about 56.5%[1] of Indiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Highland follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Highland?

January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Can my hamster's bedding or toys be cremated with them?

Many crematoria will include a small natural item, such as a paper toy, a little hay or a cotton cloth, but not plastic, metal or anything painted, which can leave residue among a very small amount of ash. Ask first. Plenty of families keep the favorite wheel or hideout instead, or place a chew toy in the box for a garden burial.

Can two cage mates be cremated together?

Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
