Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Michigan, at about 69.5%[1], but burial still has deep roots. You'll see both among rodent keepers too. Neither is more proper. For a pet this small, the practical questions are whether you own your garden, whether you can dig deep enough and whether you'd like something to keep.

Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
