Horizon City, Texas
Hamster and rat goodbyes in Horizon City: the local picture
The open Chihuahuan Desert around Horizon City, with its creosote flats and big sunsets, is where many households enjoyed quiet evenings outside with their animals. For a desert scattering, private land with the owner's permission is simplest; public and state land have their own rules. Spring winds can be fierce here, so pick a calm morning and stand with the wind at your back.
Horizon City is a fast-growing town on the desert mesa about 18 miles southeast of downtown El Paso, with newer homes on sandy lots and long views toward the mountains. Many residents commute into El Paso or to Fort Bliss. Aftercare providers based in El Paso serve the area, and a pickup from one of the newer subdivisions is usually quick once they have your address.
Feed stores and farm-supply shops around Horizon City often sell hamsters, mice and rats, and staff there may be the first to hear when one dies young. If a pet from the same batch died within weeks of coming home, tell the store. Wet tail was the most common specific cause of death in a large UK study of pet hamsters, at 7.88%[1] of deaths, and it can spread among animals still on sale.
About 25,118 people live in Horizon City, which makes it the 129th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is El Paso, about 18 miles (29 km) away, which is where some providers serving Horizon City are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Socorro (5 miles), El Paso (18 miles, a larger centre) and Sunland Park (26 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
55.7%[2]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
1.75 years[3]
Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.
1.5-3 years[4]
Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.
3-5% of body weight[5]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little
In Texas, around 55.7%[2] of people are cremated. Pet crematoria are well established as a result, although most still set their lowest price band around cats. If you're in Horizon City and want a private cremation for a rat or hamster, ask directly whether a pocket-pet rate exists; not every provider advertises one.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Horizon City only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Horizon City
A body this small changes quickly in heat. In Horizon City's warmest weeks, don't leave your hamster or mouse in the cage, on a windowsill or in a parked car while you decide. Wrap them in a paper towel, place them in a small box, and keep the box in the fridge (never next to food, and in a sealed bag). That gives you a calm day or two.
If your rat or hamster died suddenly during a Horizon City heatwave, heatstroke is a common cause. It isn't your fault; it happens even in careful homes. If you have other rodents, move their cage away from windows and out of direct sun, add a ceramic tile or a frozen water bottle wrapped in a cloth, and keep the room shaded.

Is cremating a hamster worth the price in Horizon City?
About 6 million[6] US households keep small animals, and only around 18% of them have a hamster,[7] so few Horizon City providers build a price list around rodents. That's why our cost calculator starts from the smallest published bands. Use it to see a realistic range before you call, then ask each provider to confirm their figure in writing.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial and scattering rules in Texas
One rule applies everywhere: if your rat or hamster was put to sleep, the drugs stay in the body. Since 2003[9], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated so wildlife can't eat them, and the same caution makes sense in Texas. Local burial and scattering rules follow.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Horizon City.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Horizon City or your HOA adds anything.
Step by step for a small pet in Horizon City
- Look for signs of life gently. A hamster kept somewhere chilly can slip into torpor, so warm them and give it a few hours before you decide.
- Keep your pet safe and cool, boxed with a liner, out of the sun and away from other animals.
- Think about euthanasia drugs. When a vet has put your pet to sleep, wildlife can be harmed by the body, so go much deeper and cover with a slab, or cremate instead.
- Compare two options: a private or communal cremation somewhere near Horizon City, and a grave at home. Note the cost of each side by side.
- Consider cage mates who died close together. Some providers will cremate the pair privately and return the ashes in a single vial, so ask.
- Choose a memorial that fits, whether that's a photo frame, a tiny urn or a plant on the windowsill.
Ways to mark a short, bright life
Horizon City's hottest month is June, when highs reach about 97F, and the dry air can make a closed garage or car dangerously hot within minutes. After a pet dies, get the body into air conditioning and onto a towel, and set a few sealed bags of ice in cloth beside it. December nights drop to the mid-30s, so in winter an unheated room will usually do until pickup.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Horizon City?
The closest communities we cover are Socorro (about 5 miles), El Paso (about 18 miles) and Sunland Park (about 26 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Horizon City too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[2]. We show it on the Horizon City page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How does Horizon City's weather affect little one aftercare?
June is the hottest month in Horizon City, with average highs around 97°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Will I have to travel to El Paso to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in El Paso (roughly 18 miles from Horizon City) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?
It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
Is water cremation (aquamation) available for small pets near Horizon City?
Some pet providers offer aquamation, which uses water and alkali instead of flame. Availability is patchy, and for a pet this small the amount returned is still very small. If it matters to you, ask local crematoria directly and compare it with flame cremation using our aftercare options comparison.
