Planning ahead for your hamster or rat's aftercare, calmly and early
The simplest time to plan is when your pet reaches middle age, which for a hamster is around a year. UK hamsters have a median lifespan of just 1.75 years[1], so a short written plan, one phone call and a box on the shelf will spare you hard decisions at 2am.

The short answer
When should you plan aftercare for a small pet?
Start planning when your pet is about halfway through a typical lifespan, not when they become ill. For a Syrian hamster that's around one year, for a rat about eighteen months, and for a gerbil around eighteen months to two years. The plan is short: burial or cremation, where, who to call, a rough budget, and what you want to keep.
Most owners feel the loss coming anyway. In the RSPCA's pet-loss survey, 75.4%[2] experienced anticipatory grief before their pet died. Turning that worry into a few practical decisions often eases it, because the hardest choices are already made when the day comes.

Signs of age include thinning fur, weight loss, slower movement, stiff back legs in rats, less wheel time in hamsters, and longer sleep. The plan itself
What should you decide in advance?
- Burial or cremation? If burial, choose the spot now, before the ground freezes, and check you're allowed. If cremation, decide private (ashes back) or communal.
- Who will you call? Find an exotics-experienced vet and an out-of-hours clinic that sees rodents. Save both numbers in your phone today.
- Which crematorium, if any? Ask for their small-pet price and whether you can drop off yourself. Our questions to ask a rodent cremation provider keep the call short.
- What's the budget? Write down a number you're comfortable with, including any keepsake.
- Who needs to be there? Decide whether children will be told straight away, and who will help with a burial.
Most people skip this step and take whatever is offered on the day. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority found that 89%[5] of cremation buyers never compared providers, and fewer than half, 47%[6], remembered being told about the full range of options. Keep it on a shelf
What should you keep ready at home?
A small aftercare kit sounds morbid, but owners who have one say it made the day calmer. Keep it somewhere out of sight, like a wardrobe shelf, so it isn't a daily reminder.
- A small cardboard or wooden box that fits your pet comfortably.
- A soft cotton cloth or clean scrap of their bedding.
- Disposable gloves and a sealable bag for the fridge if you need to wait.
- A printed note with your vet, out-of-hours clinic and chosen crematorium numbers.
- Non-toxic ink or air-dry clay, if you'd like a paw print.

Which keepsakes are easier to make while your pet is alive?
Photos and videos are the obvious ones, and the most treasured are ordinary: your rat asleep in a sleeve, the hamster stuffing its cheeks. Take a few with the whole family. A paw print can be taken gently from a calm, living rat using pet-safe ink on card, or pressed into soft clay. Hamsters and mice are usually too wriggly, so ask the crematorium or your vet to take one afterward.

Paying for it
How much should you set aside for a small pet's aftercare?
Home burial costs nothing. Communal cremation usually sits at the bottom of a crematorium's price list, and private cremation for pets up to 30 lb in the US often runs $100 to $175[7]. Few insurers cover rodents, and even dog and cat policies with end-of-life add-ons cap payouts, such as Lemonade's end-of-life add-on, which reimbursed up to $500[8], so plan to pay yourself.

Questions people ask
Is it morbid to plan for my hamster's death?
Not at all. It's a practical kindness to yourself and your family. With small pets, decline can be quick, and deciding in advance means you won't be choosing a provider or a burial spot in a panic. Most people feel relief once it's done.
Can I pre-pay for my rat's cremation?
Some crematoria offer pre-paid plans, though they're more common for dogs and cats. For a rodent, the amounts are small enough that most owners simply note the provider and price and set the money aside. If you do pre-pay, get the terms in writing and check what happens if you move.
What if my pet dies at night or on a holiday?
You don't need to do anything urgent. Wrap your pet, place them in a box and keep them somewhere cool overnight, or in the fridge for a day or two. Call your chosen provider when they open. This is exactly why having the kit and numbers ready helps.
Should I choose a burial spot before the ground freezes?
If you live somewhere with hard winters and your pet is elderly, yes. Some owners dig the hole in autumn and cover it with a board. Otherwise, keeping a wrapped pet in the freezer until the thaw is a common and perfectly acceptable alternative.
Who should I tell about the plan?
Anyone who might be home when your pet dies, including older children, a partner or a pet-sitter. A short note on the fridge or in the kit, with the key phone numbers and your burial or cremation choice, means anyone can follow it calmly.
