In France, cremation is chosen for only about 44.91%[1] of people, so you may need to ask your vet directly about cremation, because it isn't always offered first. For a hamster that's easy: most practices have an arrangement with a regional crematorium even if few clients use it. Ask how long ashes take and whether pocket pets go on their own tray.

Heat, cold and timing for a tiny body in Dijon

Cremating a hamster or rat needs no permit anywhere we cover. The rules that matter for small pets are about burial and scattering: whether you can bury in your own garden, how deep, and how far from water. Here's what applies in Bourgogne-Franche-Comte.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle for a rongeur. Individual cremation returns the ashes; collective doesn't. Burial of small animals on your own land is generally allowed away from homes and water sources, but check with your mairie. For a hamster, ask whether individual cremation has a small-animal price below the cat band.
What to do when your hamster or rat dies in Dijon
- Take a photo or a clipping from their coat, and hold on to the wheel, hammock or hideout they loved if that feels right.
- Wrap your pet in something that breaks down, like paper, cotton or a small cardboard box. Avoid plastic tubs.
- Keep them in the fridge if burial or drop-off is more than a few hours away. Only freeze if your provider agrees.

Why does the Dijon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) reports about 44.91%[1] of France residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dijon?
Usually yes. Lyon is about 108 miles away and Reims is about 142 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I scatter my hamster's ashes in a Dijon park?
A pinch of ash is tiny and rarely noticed, but parks and public spaces often have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission. Private land with the owner's consent is simplest. Many families scatter under a plant in their own garden or planter instead, and keep a little back in a vial.
Should I get a necropsy if my rat died suddenly in Dijon?
A necropsy, the animal version of a post-mortem, can show why a pet died, which helps if you keep other rats or bought several from the same breeder. What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Can I send my pet for cremation in Dijon if it died of an illness?
Yes. Tell the crematorium what your vet suspected so they can handle your pet appropriately. If illness was the cause, cremation can be a safer choice than a garden burial, and clean the cage thoroughly before any new or surviving pets use it. 'Wet tail' in hamsters, for example, spreads between animals.
