Local attitudes to cremation and burial
With about 76.0%[2] of people in Germany choosing cremation, local families rarely have to explain why they'd like a pet's ashes home. Even for a hamster, a small vial on a shelf is an ordinary, accepted thing here. Just be realistic about how little comes back, and choose a keepsake sized for a pinch.

Before you bury or scatter in Saxony
Public parks, nature reserves and shared courtyards are off-limits for pet burial almost everywhere, including Saxony. Private land with the owner's permission is the usual answer, and a deep planter counts as your own ground. Here's what else applies locally.
In Germany, you can usually bury a small pet on your own land outside water- and nature-protection areas, subject to local conditions. For a hamster or degu, many families go deeper to keep foxes out. A Tierkrematorium offers Einzeleinäscherung (individual) or Sammeleinäscherung (collective); for a pet this small, ask whether a lower Kleintier price applies.
If your rat, mouse or hamster has just died
- Take a moment with a long life. Chinchillas and degus live far longer than hamsters, so this grief may be bigger than you expected.
- Weigh your pet on a kitchen scale when one is handy; cremation prices go by weight, and the figure hints at how much ash to expect.

Keeping a hamster, rat or mouse close
Leipzig's pets mostly live in apartments, many of them in the high-ceilinged Gründerzeit buildings of Südvorstadt, Plagwitz and Gohlis, often several floors up with no lift. Carrying a larger pet, a cage or a terrarium down those stairwells is hard on a sad day. How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[2]. We show it on the Leipzig page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Leipzig?
Usually yes. Dresden is about 62 miles away, Berlin is about 93 miles away and Hanover is about 134 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What is wet tail, and could it affect my other hamsters?
Wet tail is a severe bacterial diarrhea, most common in young hamsters around the stress of a new home. In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
How long can I keep my rat or hamster before burial or cremation?
A few hours in a cool room is fine. For longer, wrap your pet, place them in a small box in a sealed bag and keep them in the fridge, which usually gives a day or two. If you plan to freeze, for example to bury after the winter thaw, check first with any crematorium you might use.
How do I explain a hamster's death to a young child?
Use plain words like "died" rather than "went to sleep", which can make bedtime frightening. Keep it short and honest, then let your child help: choosing the box, drawing a picture, picking a plant for the grave. Our guide to talking with children about losing a rodent has age-by-age wording.
Do I need to use the crematorium my Leipzig vet recommends?
No. The vet's arrangement is convenient, especially after euthanasia, but it usually adds a handling fee and limits you to one provider. With a pet small enough to carry in a shoebox, you can often drop them off directly at another crematorium that offers a small-pet rate or a separate tray.
