Caring for your rat, hamster or gerbil in St. John after they die

St. John, Indiana

Pocket-pet aftercare in a place like St. John

St. John is one of Lake County's newer and faster-growing towns, stretched along US 41 about 31 miles south of Chicago, with the Illinois line just to the west. Most homes here went up in recent decades: two-story houses on cul-de-sacs, some larger lots, and townhome developments. Because so many Region providers pass along US 41, a home collection is usually simple to schedule. Confirm what's included before you say yes.

St. John's parks, retention ponds and the farm fields still visible at the town's southern edge give families plenty of open space. Cedar Lake lies a few miles south, and some families have fond memories there. Public parks and lakeshores may restrict scattering, so ask the right office first. Many residents simply create a small garden spot at home, where the memory stays close.

Living outside St. John on a rural road? A pet this small doesn't need a special collection. You can take them to your vet in a lined box and ask them to include your pet on the next crematorium run, or drive to the crematorium yourself if you want to hand them over in person. Both save mileage fees.

St. John is home to about 24,841 people, the 42nd-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve St. John are based about 31 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

For a second opinion on price, Schererville (3 miles), Crown Point (7 miles) and Highland (7 miles) are close enough that their providers cover St. John routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

56.5%[1]

The NFDA projected Indiana's cremation rate at 56.5% for 2024.

1.75 years[2]

Pet hamsters in the UK have a median age at death of 1.75 years.

1.5-3 years[3]

Pet rats live about 1.5-3 years and weigh 350-650 g as adults.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

To check the figures yourself, see O'Neill et al. 2022, Journal of Small Animal Practice and Merck Veterinary Manual.

Why the local cremation rate matters, a little

About 56.5%[1] of people in Indiana are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Small-pet aftercare has moved the same way, but more slowly: many families still bury hamsters and rats at home, and cremation is chosen mostly by renters, city dwellers and people who expect to move.

Torpor, heatwaves and frozen ground in St. John

St. John winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. Before anything else, check it isn't torpor. Hamsters in a chilly room can drop into a deep, cold sleep that looks like death: stiff, cool, barely breathing. Warm them gently in your hands or a towel and watch for a few hours before deciding.

A power cut in January, February, March, November and December can chill a St. John home fast, and small rodents feel it first. If a hamster, gerbil or mouse died during an outage or a broken-heater night, the cold may be why, so a torpor check comes first. For the survivors, a deep pile of hay, a wrapped hot-water bottle outside the cage and a blanket over three sides buy time until the heat returns.

How much to budget for a rat, hamster or mouse

For a pet this light, the comparison that matters most in St. John is private versus communal. By our estimate, private cremation costs about twice as much as communal across the markets we've checked,[5] and with a rodent the extra money buys a teaspoon of ash rather than a jar. If a keepsake matters, pay for private; if not, communal is just as respectful.

Indiana rules for pocket pets

If your rodent died of something contagious, the rules in Indiana and common sense point the same way: cremation is the safer choice, and used bedding should be bagged and binned rather than composted. Your vet can tell you whether the illness was likely infectious. Burial and scattering details for Indiana are set out below.

What to do when your hamster or rat dies in St. John

  1. Breathe. A pet this small doesn't need any urgent calls. Wrap them in a paper towel or soft cloth and place them in a small box.
  2. Talk to the children using the real word, died, rather than saying the pet went to sleep. Invite them to pick the box or to make a drawing to tuck in beside their friend.
  3. Decide where your pet will rest. Your own garden, a deep planter, or a crematorium serving St. John.
  4. If burying, dig deeper than feels necessary, then weigh the grave down with a paving slab or flat rock so dogs, cats and foxes can't dig.
  5. If cremating, ring one or two providers, then request the price by email with the words private or communal on it and any container charge spelled out.
  6. Drop your pet off yourself where possible, in a box with a liner; most providers charge extra to collect.
  7. Plan a small ritual, and five minutes is enough: say something, add a bloom, and tuck a treat they loved next to them.

Keeping their memory alive in St. John

St. John gets the full Northwest Indiana winter, with freezing weather from November through March, occasional lake-effect squalls and January lows near 15 degrees. When it's that cold, a small animal can safely wait in the garage overnight, wrapped and on a tarp. The mid-80s heat of July reverses that: move your pet to the coolest room, add frozen packs in a towel, and book a prompt pickup.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Indiana?

For people, yes: about 56.5%[1] of Indiana deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in St. John follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 31 miles from St. John) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from St. John?

Usually yes. Schererville is about 3 miles away, Crown Point is about 7 miles away and Highland is about 7 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How does St. John's weather affect little one aftercare?

July is the hottest month in St. John, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.

Is it safe to bury a rat that was put to sleep?

Only if you can bury deeply. Euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can harm wildlife or pets that dig. Since 2003[7], US labels have warned that euthanized animals must be buried deeply or cremated. Go at least three feet down with a heavy slab on top, or choose cremation instead.

Is private cremation worth it for a 100 g pet?

It depends on what you want afterwards. Private cremation returns a teaspoon or two of ash from a Syrian hamster, enough for a vial or a pendant, but it can cost several times what the pet did. If you don't need ashes back, communal cremation or a deep garden burial is just as respectful. There's no wrong choice.
