A few places restrict certain rodents as pets; gerbils, for instance, aren't allowed in California or Hawaii. If a pet you weren't strictly meant to keep has died in Ontario, don't let that stop you asking a vet for help. Their concern is a safe, respectful goodbye. Few crematoria list a pocket-pet price; the smallest published bands are built around cats. Ask whether a hamster or rat can be cremated privately on a separate tray, and for less than the cat rate.

A calm plan for the next 48 hours
- Breathe. Nobody needs phoning straight away for an animal this size. Fold a soft cloth or a sheet of paper towel around them and settle them into a little box.

Is cremation common in Canada?
For people, yes: about 81.1%[1] of Canada deaths end in cremation, according to CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Barrie follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Barrie?

In Royal Veterinary College data on pet hamsters it topped the list of named causes of death, at 7.88%[7] of deaths. It can spread through shared bedding and hands, so cremation is the safer aftercare, and the cage needs a deep clean before any new hamster moves in.
Can two cage mates be cremated together?
Yes, if you'd like their ashes mixed. Tell the provider in writing that you want them cremated together and returned in one container. If you'd rather keep them apart, ask for two private cremations and separate labeled vials. Either way, ask for a per-animal price; some providers discount a second small pet on the same day.
