For a rodent, the practical rule of thumb is simple: your own land, deep enough that animals can't reach, away from water, with a stone on top.

Few crematoria list a pocket-pet price; the smallest published bands are built around cats. Ask whether a hamster or rat can be cremated privately on a separate tray, and for less than the cat rate.
